Kane Cornes is sick of the excuses that he’s hearing from Brisbane about Joe Daniher.
While Cornes rates Daniher as a player, he thinks the star forward makes far too many costly mistakes including crucial misses that he should be kicking.
In particular, Daniher missed a couple of gettable chances late in the 79-78 loss to Collingwood last Saturday including a set shot from 35 metres out on only a slight angle that would have put Brisbane up 23 points with less than seven minutes remaining.
Brisbane also acknowledges Daniher’s occasional flaws, but Lions footy boss Danny Daly put that down to being part of the package that comes with the 30-year-old. While he’ll sometimes make a blunder, he’ll also often produce the extraordinary that no other forwards can in the AFL.
While the Lions know what they’ll get from their star target, Daly says that Daniher and coach Chris Fagan do discuss where he can get better to improve in certain aspects.
“Joe’s Joe, we know what we get from him,” Daly told SEN Afternoons.
“We did have a bit of a chat in our review this week about that, and he put his hand up and acknowledged that there were a couple of examples on the weekend where he potentially could have done better.
“But in saying that he had a good game and kicked four goals and kept us in the game.
“We all have those moments unfortunately and the conversations have been had between himself and Fages over the journey from time to time. We're not shy of having a nice conversation with each other.
“But we also know what makes Joe tick. Sometimes, unfortunately, these things happen in games…
“Those conversations have been few and far between, but they happen.”
Cornes – who was already frustrated by Daniher – wasn’t a fan of Daly’s comments as he feels that the star forward is being let off for making mistakes that he simply shouldn’t make.
Cornes would prefer if the Lions were instead coaching Daniher to try and get those occasional flaws out of his game.
“I'll tell you what I do get sick of a little bit, the ‘Joe’s Joe’…” Cornes said.
“It may be harsh just to focus on one player, but Joe's not Joe when he's kicking torp at a critical stage halfway through the third quarter, or he’s lining up from 35 metres out directly in front to put them 23 points up for a top two finish and he sprays it.
“Or when he burns his teammate, Joe's just not Joe … what are we coaching Joe not to be Joe?
“I said after the game of the week, this is why he'll never be a superstar of the game. He’s a good player and he’s kicked 49 goals for the year, we’d all like a player as talented as Joe Daniher.
“But the, ‘Joe's Joe’ talk annoys me.”
Daniher and the Lions will hope to finish the home and away season strongly when they face Essendon at the Gabba on Saturday night.
