Malcolm Blight has identified a player that could surprise in this year’s Brownlow Medal count.

The Sydney Swans had plenty of key contributors as they started the season with a flurry by winning 13 of their first 14 games on their way to the minor premiership.

The likes of Errol Gulden, Chad Warner and Isaac Heeney, despite the latter being ineligible, are expected to all poll well on September 23, but Blight believes Nick Blakey could make his presence felt.

Blakey was named in the back pocket of the All-Australian team while polling 40 coaches votes and Blight is tipping him to be a bolter in there 2024 Brownlow.

“You know how Sydney won all those games, they’re going to get a lot of votes early,” Blight said on SEN’s Sportsday SA.

“We know Gulden is a very good player and gets votes, Heeney we know, Warner (as well).

“But Nick Blakey. He is the key to them nearly, when he runs that ball.

“I’ll guarantee you that he’s going to get a lot of votes in the Brownlow. He’s virtually played half-back flank, centre half-back, back pocket, everywhere but everywhere.

“The way he dashes just catches your eye. Mark my words, Nick Blakey is going to be a surprise in the Brownlow Medal.

“Only because the defenders haven’t won anything for years and years. When I’ve reflected on the games that I saw, he was always in their best players.”

Blakey, 24, has polled a total of five Brownlow vote across his 125-game career which came in three games last season.

Blight is not tipping Blakey to win it but believes he’ll poll well so could be one to look at in Top 10 markets.

A few months ago the V/AFL legend tipped a two-way tie in this year’s Brownlow count.
