SEN Track: Canberra Best Bets – September 20, 2024

The handlebars will be down for the inaugural TAB Black Mountain (1000m) which has attracted a very fast group of country gallopers chasing a $100,000 bonus. That bonus is on offer for any speedster who can break Guard of Honour’s track record of 0-55.84.

It is a high-quality meeting across the board with all races boasting over 10 acceptances. The day is sponsored by Joseph Jones Racing, who will host 250 of their owners in a luncheon on course. The foundations will be rocking should they train a winner or two.

Best Bets

Race 5, No.4 - Louies Legacy

Barbara Joseph, Paul & Matt Jones target this race meeting with chances each year and I think they’ve got a great value proposition in this quality Benchmark 75 over the mile. Louie’s Legacy was as tough as old boots last start when being wide without cover and holding on for 2nd.

He was well supported that day and should find himself in a much kinder position here, hopefully one out one back.

He’s yet to miss the quinella here on his home track and I’ve got knocks on each of his key opponents. He is a great chance at each way odds at time of writing.

Race 6, No.5 - Bomarea

Bomarea née Tarpup (see Racing Australia and breeding) makes the long trek south from Port Macquarie with Marc Quinn who is hunting the $100,000 bonus and a slot in the Kosciuszko.

She is a very speedy mare having finished just behind Compelling Truth when he ran 0:55.82 in the Sir James Kirby (1000m) over the Grafton Carnival. I think she would only have to equal that effort to be right in the finish here.

I think there is much merit in her last start, despite the 9 of 9 we’ll read in the race book. That day she was caught wide on a very hot tempo and was still in the picture with 100m of the 1100m trip to go.

She’ll only have to go 1000m here on Friday and is beautifully in with 56.5kg.

She’s drawn perfectly in Barrier 3 and will certainly lead them up. If she has travelled down soundly, she will be winning.
