Cameron Smith weighed in on the debate for the Kangaroos’ fullback spot today on SEN 1170 Breakfast with Vossy & Brandy, discussing the competition between Dylan Edwards, James Tedesco, and Kalyn Ponga.

When asked who he would select as Australia’s fullback, Smith confidently responded, “I’d go with Edwards.”

"I think there's a clear decision made when Michael Maguire went with Dylan Edwards for the NSW side,” he told SEN Breakfast with Vossy & Brandy.

While Tedesco was named for Game 2 due to an injury to Edwards, Smith noted that Edwards led the team to victory and believes that should influence head coach, Mal Meninga’s upcoming selection.

"When Edwards was fit again, he took back that jersey and was able to go on and win the series for NSW,” he added.

The panel discussed merits to all contenders, but Smith emphasised the importance of State of Origin selections.

Edwards was named in the NSW starting line-up and whilst Ponga played for the QLD side, was not the first-choice fullback.

Despite Tedesco not being named, he is the incumbent Australian captain, which could weigh heavily on Meninga’s decision.

Smith cemented that whilst Meninga is a very loyal person, he will likely trust the choices make during Origin, gives his years coaching in that arena.

However, Smith added that if concerns arise over Edwards’ knee injury, he would back Tedesco for the spot.

The Australian side will be chasing a win, especially following last year’s 30-0 defeat to New Zealand in the Pacific Championship.

"Off the back of last year's loss… I think he *(Meninga) *wants to go with what is the best possible line up for Australia."

The 2024 Pacific Championship will kick off in Brisbane on October 18th.
