Carlton vice-captain Jacob Weitering says he would be excited to play alongside Dan Houston in 2025 if a trade eventuated.

The back-to-back All-Australian has requested a trade to Victoria officially on Tuesday, though did not nominate a club and is willing to return to the Power if something can’t be worked out.

Carlton has been strongly linked, with Jack Silvagni a close friend of the contracted defender and Michael Voss coaching him previously at the Power.

“He’s a two-time All-Australian. If I was marking it, I’d be kicking it a lot less and handballing to someone like him,” Weitering told SEN’s Whateley.

“They’re all quality players and he’s certainly one of them. A great user by foot and a huge part of what Port Adelaide wanted to do in the back end of the season and was certainly missed in the finals.

“We’ll see what happens with him, I’ll leave that to him and his management.”

Weitering is out of contract in 2025, but is certain he wants to be a ‘Blue for life’, though doesn’t have a timeline on when a deal could get done.

“It’s always an ongoing conversation, especially when you’re about 12 months out from finishing up the current contract. I’ve always said I want to be a Blue for life and those discussions will certainly take place in the near future I’d expect,” Weitering said.

“I want to be here for as long as I can if my body holds up. I’ll leave that to my manager and the club to get after and just make sure I play some good football next year. I’m not too sure (on when it’ll get done).”

The trade period looms as a defining period for Carlton coming off a disappointing end to the 2024 season, something Weitering says the playing group understands.

“The trade period will be an interesting one for our club. There are some decisions to be made on some players and I guess it didn’t come as a shock for everyone, but there are some decisions like your Matt Owies and Matt Kennedy and Lewis Young and I’ll be transparent with you, you hear all sorts of names in trade period and Carlton typically is always up in lights as well,” he said.

“It’s exciting to become that club that players want to come to. I know in my early days not many wanted to come.

“Hopefully we do all the right things from a talent and culture point of view and take that next step.”

Carlton delisted five players following the 2024 season, including Jack Martin, Caleb Marchbank and David Cuningham.
