The five coaches who most need to win now

Who are the coaches that need success sooner than later in order to keep their respective jobs?

That is the question Kane Cornes pondered on AFL Trade Radio’s The Early Trade on Monday morning.

He listed the five coaches that need to win now and why the trade period could be so significant for them given they are the most likely to trade away draft picks for experienced players for the here and now.

1 - Luke Beveridge (Western Bulldogs)

“The coach under the most pressure next year? You’d think he’d be up there,” Cornes said.

“In terms of what he needs to do, I don’t think he needs to do a whole lot.

“I think they’re fine with their playing list. It is absolutely jam-packed and stacked with everything you need to potentially win a premiership.

“There isn’t a missing piece. Ryley Sanders will improve. They’ve got depth, they’ve got stars, their spine is absolutely stacked.

“They sky is the limit for Sam Darcy and what he’s capable of. They’ll definitely demand more from Jamarra Ugle-Hagan.

“They’ll get a pretty good pick for Bailey Smith. I don’t think ‘Bevo’ needs to do a whole lot other than just implement a game plan that stacks up.”

2 - Justin Longmuir (Fremantle)

“I don’t want to see a contract in front of him until at least Round 12 or 13.

“They were in a good position then lost their last four. They were playing finals and finishing top four…

“They choked the last four games of the season and now the pressure is coming. If they started the year 0-6, regardless of that one-year contract, the pressure would have been on.”

3 - Matthew Nicks (Adelaide)

“Matty Nicks needs wins.

“If things go badly for Nicks in the first 10 weeks of next season I could see a rash decision. Having two years to run means nothing.

“They re-signed him prematurely with one of the more ridiculous coaching extensions before the season started. That was all because they were petrified of the media.

“He’s really lucky. If he was made to wait for an extension like he should have been he would have been in all sorts.”

4 - Michael Voss (Carlton)

“It’s a toss-up between Michael Voss and Simon Goodwin.

“Vossy needs to win. They’re all in anyway. It’s not as if they’re looking to rebuild or go to the draft. They’re looking to bring Dan Houston in.

“Their list is in a reasonable spot. It’s all about their injury list.

“I’d love to see them have a real go at Sam De Koning. That’s the player they need.”

5 - Simon Goodwin (Melbourne)

“Goodwin has the backdrop of a premiership in recent times. He’s got a bit more breathing room than Voss.”
