Could Geelong’s Sam De Koning be gettable this trade period?
While he’s contracted until the end of next season, three-time All-Australian Dan Hannebery is hearing that there’s a possibility he could leave the Cattery this off-season.
SEN’s Kane Cornes pondered if De Koning was gettable after he was left out of Geelong’s side late in the 2024 season, with AFL Media’s Josh Gabelich adding that Carlton would ‘love to reunite the brothers’, despite being told that he won’t be traded this off-season.
While the Cats are stating that they’ll be keeping hold of the 23-year-old, Hannebery’s mail says otherwise and he responded to a caller who wondered if he could be involved in a deal that gets Melbourne’s Clayton Oliver to Geelong.
“Once again, a little birdie told me,” Hannebery said on AFL Trade Radio.
“My mail is that he could be potentially gettable Sam De Koning, and I'd love to see whether Carlton gets involved.
“Could they somehow get him to Carlton and then Carlton gives Melbourne a pick to allow that trade to go through for Clayton Oliver?
“Could it be Clayton to Geelong, De Koning to Carlton and Melbourne getting picks from the Blues?
“I think it is something that could work because a little birdie told me that it's a possibility that Sam De Koning could leave, even though he’s contracted.
“Sometimes these are outlandish statements that come out from, ‘My brother’s, cousin’s, father’s dog’, but I feel like it’s earlier in the chain the mail I had from that regard.”
De Koning played 23 games in the club’s 2022 premiership season but played just 19 games in 2024, featuring two times in the VFL late in the season, primarily playing in the ruck.
