“Every bit as good”: Why J-Mac believes Broadsiding could enter The Autumn Sun territory

Broadsiding could potentially reach the heights of The Autumn Sun in the mind of James McDonald.

The star jockey will partner with the gun colt in this Saturday’s Group 1 Caulfield Guineas in which he is a raging hot favourite.

Broadsiding has drawn a difficult barrier in nine but McDonald is confident he can overcome that and prove just how good the James Cummings-trained colt is.

“It’s not going to be easy but he is a talented colt,” McDonald said on SENTrack’s Giddy Up.

“As long as he’s cherry ripe I’m sure he’ll give his best.

“There’s only three horses (Broadsiding, Evaporate and Rue De Royale) that have been out to a mile in the race. A few of them are bred to be sprint types and he’s obviously got pretty good stamina as we’ve seen in the JJ Atkins.

“Hopefully we’ll get a good position and he can do his best.”

SENTrack’s Gareth Hall suggested that Broadsiding, the son of Too Darn Hot, could “do an Autumn Sun”, referencing the seemingly effortless victory of that star horse under McDonald in the 2018 Caulfield Guineas.

“I hope so, I hope it’s as good as The Autumn Sun’s performance,” was J-Mac’s response.

“That was pretty sensational that day. I think he’s every bit as good as him, the way he’s going anyway.

“The Autumn Sun (also) won a Golden Rose leading into a Caulfield Guineas. He (Broadsiding) has got big boots to fill but I think he’s a pretty talented colt.”

The Autumn Sun, who won the Caulfield Guineas at $1.7, saluted on eight occasions from nine career starts including five Group 1s before being retired to stud.

Broadsiding has so far won five of his eight starts, three of which have been at Group 1 level, which could increase to four on Saturday.
