Will we get some deadline day drama this year?

That it was Sam Edmund is expecting with many big deals still to be sorted in the 2024 trade period.

In the past there have been some massive deals that went down to the wire and that could be the case again this year.

“There’s been some absolute monsters that have been done on the final day, in fact, into the final minute,” he said on AFL Trade Radio’s The Early Trade.

“You get the feeling we’re going to get at least a couple this year.”

See the top 7 last minute deadline day deals below:

Top deadline day deals

1 - Jeremy Cameron (GWS to Geelong in 2020)

“I was taken immediately to Jeremy Cameron in 2020 when thinking of this list.

“It got done in the dying seconds of the trade period. The Cats gave up three first-round selections in this deal, which was the first time any club has sent out a trio of first-round picks for a single player.

“The Geelong website had some audio from him and he said he actually thought that it happened after the deadline, but no, it had happened in the final minute before.”

2 - Adam Treloar (Collingwood to Western Bulldogs in 2020)

“In the same year, Adam Treloar was done very, very late.

“The Pies were forced to accept the cut-price deal of Pick 14, some second-round pick swaps.

“They also agreed to pay a significant portion of Treloar’s salary for five years, somewhere around $1.5 million to contribute to that over the course of the five years at the Dogs.

“So that one went down to the death.”

3 - Josh Dunkley (Western Bulldogs to Brisbane in 2022)

“Held to his contract in 2021 when Essendon came pretty hard, and then in 2022 his move to Brisbane went down to the wire.

“The draft loomed for him. The Dogs wanted two first-rounders inside the final half an hour.

“The Lions got Dunkley, the Bulldogs’ future third-round pick and another future third. Heading to the Dogs was Pick 21, a future first, a future second and a future fourth.

“So there was a lot of shuffling but he got there.”

4 - Massimo D’Ambrosio (Essendon to Hawthorn in 2023)

“Last year, Massimo D’Ambrosio was traded from Essendon to Hawthorn just before the deadline.

“It was Pick 61 and a future fourth, and they got that done very late.”

5 - Dylan Shiel (GWS to Essendon in 2018)

“One of the most stressful ones.

“A week-long standoff between Essendon and the Giants and it almost let the Blues in at the end to get Dylan Shiel.

“It was done with 10 minutes left. The Bombers handed over Pick 11 and a future first-round pick.

“Interestingly, the Giants used that first pick to get Jye Caldwell which Jason McCartney and Adrian Dodoro would clash over in 2020 when Caldwell crossed back down to Essendon.”

6 - Brett Deledio (Richmond to GWS in 2016)

“With a year left on his contract at Richmond, he desperately wanted to get to Geelong which looked like it was going to happen.

“The Cats couldn't finalise a deal, the Giants pounced.

“He flew to Sydney on Tuesday, he joined them on Wednesday night for Pick 15 and 54.”

7 - Jaeger O’Meara (Gold Coast to Hawthorn in 2016)

“Hawthorn in that same year got Jaeger O’Meara inside the final 10 minutes of the window.

“This was a drawn out negotiation. Gold Coast were furious. They accused him of being duplicitous and O’Meara requested a trade to the Hawks on September 13.

“The deal wasn't completed until nine minutes before the deadline after Carlton came to the rescue with a last-minute pick swap.”
