There is a certain galloper that Blake Shinn is quite keen on this weekend.
The star jockey will ride UK raider Docklands in Saturday’s Cox Plate and while he gives that horse a decent chance, there is a filly going around earlier in the day that he is rather fond of.
Her name is Certain Rise and Shinn believes she will run a good race in the Crockett Stakes over 1200m on the second day of the Cox Plate Carnival at The Valley.
“I’ve got a solid hand both Friday and Saturday,” Shinn said on SENTrack.
“I like a filly called Certain Rise, she’s running in the Crockett.
“She got beat by Lofty Arch who won (at Caulfield) last Saturday. Then she won at Mornington very impressively, nearly broke the class track record.
“I think she’s a filly of high quality and should run well.”
Certain Rise, trained by Mike Moroney and Glen Thompson, has had two career starts for a win and a second.
Speaking of his Cox Plate hope, Docklands, Shinn is expecting the Group 1 Queen Anne place-getter to settle near the rear of the nine-horse field before having a crack at them late.
“He likes to settle back, off midfield, and come with a run,” he said of the Harry Eustace-trained five-year-old.
“I don’t think we’ll be changing the pattern even though it’s a very small field.
“His best racing style is back and run on.”
Docklands is a $17 chance for the Group 1 weight-for-age Cox Plate over 2040m.
Shinn has been in superb form in recent times, saluting at Randwick last Saturday aboard Ostraka which came on the back of a treble on Caulfield Guineas day with Kuroyanagi, Jimmysstar and Antino (in the Toorak).
“I feel like I’m riding well,” added Shinn,
“Trainers and owners are giving me a lot of great support and to be getting results (means) the support grows.”
