“I got them good”: Paine reveals Warner message after comeback comment controversy

Former Australian captain Tim Paine was certain that his former teammate David Warner was ‘fishing’ when he made comments that he was available if selectors needed him for the upcoming India Test series.

Speaking on SEN Tassie on Friday, Paine said that Warner – who retired last year – wasn’t being serious when he put his hand up to open alongside Usman Khawaja this summer if the nation needed him.

While many disagreed with the former keeper, suggesting that Warner genuinely did want to backflip on his retirement call to play in the 2024/25 summer, Paine revealed that the 37-year-old spoke to him in recent days to confirm that his theory was correct.

“He wasn't dead serious, that’s Davey,” Paine said on SEN Tassie.

“How do I know? Because I spoke to him, that’s how. Is that good enough for the people?

“He said, ‘I got them good, haha’.

“Of course, that’s Davey’s thing. People say, ‘You’re not serious’, I am dead serious, but he’s not (with this).”

With Warner out of the picture, Aussie selectors have confirmed that they’ll name Usman Khawaja’s opening partner after the two-game ‘A’ series between Australia A and India A which begins this Thursday in Mackay.

NSW’s Sam Konstas, SA’s Nathan McSweeney, Victoria’s Marcus Harris and WA’s Cameron Bancroft – who have all been named in the Australia A squad – appear the most likely options to take the vacant opening spot.

The first of five Tests between Australia and India begins in Perth on November 22.
