SEN’s Corey Parker has criticised the underwhelming performance of the Gold Coast Titans in their first trial match against the Brisbane Broncos on Sunday.
The Titans were embarrassed in front of a healthy crowd in Toowoomba as an understrength Broncos put 50 points on the board inside an hour. The match ended 50-12 and arguably could’ve been worse had the Broncos not bombed a handful of trials.
Parker acknowledged that it was simply a trial match but he witnessed several red flags that would’ve had alarm bells ringing for Titans head coach Des Hasler.
“It was 50-6 after about an hour,” Parker told SENQ Breakfast.
“It’s quite incredible because if you looked at the lineups between the two teams, there were only four players for the Titans out of their top 17 who weren’t part of that game and they had 50 points put on them.
“Yes it’s a trial match and I get all that but (it was a shocker).
“If you are on the receiving end of 50 points, where do you go? Where to for Des?
“It looks like it’s going to be a long season. It was their first opportunity for the year to play in club colours and you get 50 put on you against a depleted team.
“It wasn’t a stacked team (they were up against).”
SEN’s Greg Alexander similarly slammed the Titans for their woeful display but believed the big takeaway from the match was the execution from the Broncos who outran their opponent by 496 metres and only 3 missed tackles in the first 60 minutes of game time.
“The Broncos looked in superb condition and they were very, very sharp,” Alexander said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“The Titans stand above in terms of losses over the weekend. The Titans had 10 first graders on the field.
“Marty Taupau looked like the best front rower ever for Brisbane on Sunday. He was just marching up the field.
“On the Broncos, they had far less first graders on the park than the Titans. Not great for the Titans but the Broncos looked impressive.”
The Broncos host the Bulldogs in Redcliffe on Saturday afternoon in their final trial match whilst the Titans will look to bounce back against the Dolphins.
