"Pissed off": Tigers slammed for act after 64-0 annihilation

Wests Tigers players have been slammed for their reaction to a 64-0 annihilation to the Melbourne Storm after they were seen laughing and joking within minutes of the siren.

The Storm equalled their biggest winning margin in club history in the obliteration with Ryan Papenhuyzen breaking Matt Geyer’s 26-year record for most individual points in a Storm game, scoring 36 of 64 points.

But it's the Tigers who have been criticised for the optics in the minutes which followed. They were seen laughing and smiling with their rivals, which Greg 'Brandy' Alexander slammed as "embarrassing".

"The thing I want them to do is get out of there and into the sheds tail between their legs," he said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

"The laugh and all that garbage? Its something I never did. It's embarrassing you’ve just been pantsed.

"64 is an embarrassment, get off the field and say nothing."

His sentiments were echoed by co-host Andrew Voss who said could see why Wests fans were furious.

"Players on the field smiling and laughing after being hammered," he said. "I get fans being pissed off.

"64-0 within a minute of it being over and the Tigers players are smiling and laughing with the opponents.

"It’s not the crime of the century but if you want to rile your fans more after this you have done it."

After five wins so far this season, Tigers were truly humbled by the Storm with coach Benji Marshall hopeful yet not convincing that the scoreline wouldn't impact his side's confidence.

“Everyone’s disappointed, embarrassed. Probably a few other words you could use, but it’s not good enough,” he said.

“There’s losing the game, and then there’s been beaten, and we got actually beat today.

“So in the balance of our season, we’re five, and five now reflect where we are, and we gotta learn from it, and we gotta get back up for next week.

“We can’t dwell on that. You can hurt from it. Take the hurt into next week and improve.

“I don’t make any excuses like we just got to be better.”

WHAT HAPPENED?

Papenhuyzen’s incredible showing consisted of four tries and 10 goals, meaning he outscored every other winning team so far this week.

The Storm put on a clinical showing, controlling the contest from the third minute where Ryan Papenhuyzen scored his first try, kicking three times to outrace three Tigers’ players to the line.

A Xavier Coates line break found Papenhuyzen back on the inside to lay on his second in the eighth minute, before Coates collected a short line drop-out and put Papenhuyzen through a gaping hole to complete a 16-minute hat-trick.

Papenhuyzen’s standout performance in such a dominant win throws his name into Origin contention, battling alongside James Tedesco and Dylan Edwards for the Blues fullback jersey.

SEN League’s Justin Horo said Papenhuyzen wouldn’t let anyone down in the Origin arena.

“The most impressive thing with what Ryan Papenhuyzen did there, a lot of those plays, and particularly the first one, he’s just all effort,” Horo said.

“I said jokingly going into the game, he could score five tries and he’s not a part of my Origin team but he has to be there abouts.

“I know Dylan Edwards deserves to be the guy and (Tedesco) has been applying pressure this year but if anything were to happen or if anyone were to put Ryan Papenhuyzen into a blue jersey, he’d do a job.”

Storm prop Nelson Asofa-Solomona returned for his second NRL game of the season after a long recovery from a concussion sustained in round three and found immediate joy, skittling Wests Tigers defenders on every run, running for 125 metres and notching a try of his own in 36 minutes.

The Storm were coming off the back of two disappointing losses which saw them give up double-digit leads.

Despite the wild trend of comebacks in Round 10 - the Titans, Rabbitohs, and Bulldogs all overcoming double digit deficits at halftime to win - there would be no comeback for the Wests Tigers today.

SEN League’s Jimmy Smith praised the Storm’s record-breaking outing.

“We laugh about the whole Craig Bellamy not being happy at any tage but he’d be happy with every stage of this,” Smith said.

“Overall, the attention to detail, the effort areas when required, and the ability to go with either set plays or a lot of the time it was skill coming to the fore. They have put the rest of the competition on notice.

“The scary thing is the fact they did it without Harry Grant who is a vital cog in this Melbourne Storm team.”

The Storm's first halves at home this season have been incredible, with a 40-point lead over the Eels, 36-point lead over the Warriors, and 34-points today amongst their half-time leads.
