The AFL world is in mourning after the tragic death of Adam Selwood at the age of just 41.
Selwood played 187 games for West Coast after being drafted in 2002. He won a flag with the Eagles in 2006 before retiring in 2012.
News of his passing was announced by a family statement via the AFL on Saturday morning.
It was met by an incredible outpouring of grief with tributes coming from clubs, former players and associates of Selwood.
Former Eagles coach Adam Simpson was heartbroken.
“I don’t know what to say. It was a pleasure to work with Adam briefly,” he said on SEN Crunch Time.
"It’s just a tragedy. It breaks your heart after what we had to deal with and for this to happen again from a family point of view. I haven’t got too many words to be honest."
One of four brothers, Adam's death tragically comes just a few months after the tragic passing of his twin Troy in February.
“It’s an unspeakable tragedy that both twins are lost to that family," SEN's Gerard Whateley said.
Within the statement, the Selwood family would pay tribute to Adam speaking to the amazing man that he was to his family as a son, husband and father.
“We are heartbroken by the passing of Adam earlier today. Words cannot express the grief and sadness we feel,” Fiona Selwood said in a statement on behalf of the family..
“Adam was a loving husband, and an incredible father to Lenny and Billie. We are devastated to lose such a wonderful husband, father, son and brother.
“We will miss Adam deeply — his spirit, his kindness, and the joy he brought to every room. His determination, the lessons he shared, and his infectious personality will stay with us always. Adam had a unique ability to make people feel special, and our family was lucky to experience that every day.
“We kindly ask for privacy as we navigate this difficult time.”
All four brothers - Adam, Troy, Scott and Joel - played AFL at the top level.
The youngest of the four, Scott, was relieved of his duties as Collingwood's forwards coach ahead of the side's MCG clash with Adelaide on Saturday.
“On behalf of everyone at Collingwood, we extend our deepest condolences to the Selwood family following the passing of Adam,” the club said.
“We send strength & all of our love to Adam’s parents Maree & Bryce, his brothers Scott & Joel, his wife Fiona & their children Lenny & Billie.”
Paying tribute to Selwood, Luke Hodge remembered their junior footy days.
“I played junior football with Adam and Troy in 1996 so, I met the Selwood family that many years ago," he said on SEN Crunch Time.
“And every time you run into them, there are always quality people and you feel for them; Joel, Scott and you feel for the whole Selwood family for what they have been through over the last few months.
“It’s terrible.”
John Worsfold and the West Coast Eagles has provided a statement regarding the loss of Adam who played as part of their 2006 premiership side.
“Adam was a great teammate who loved the club, loved his footy,” said Worsfold.
“He always put his mates and team first, and he would be saying that now. He would be wanting to see our Club grow and return to having on-field success once again.
“We drafted him at 18 and watched him grow as a player and person. We got to know the Selwood family so well over the years, and they are such wonderful people who our hearts go out to more than anything today.
“As a player, Adam was the ultimate team man. He played whatever role was required. He gave it 100 per cent and connected with everyone he was involved with.
“He’s had a massive impact on our footy Club as a player, coach and staff member.”
Cam Mooney was visibly upset during Fox Sports' broadcast of the Collingwood v Adelaide clash.
“It’s a family I’ve known for nearly 20 years and a family that I’ve grown very fond of over the years and loved,” he said.
“So to hear the news this morning, absolutely tragic... it was only three months ago that we buried Troy.
“Obviously want to send all my condolences and love to a family that I absolutely love and adore, and to a teammate that I got to play alongside with in a couple of premierships and just let everyone know that we’re all thinking of you guys and that we love you and all the best.”
The Geelong Cats have also provided a statement.
"The Geelong Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Adam Selwood.
"We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Fiona, children Lenny and Billie, brothers Joel and Scott and parents Maree and Bryce, our thoughts are with you at this time."
AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon said the AFL world would unite to support the Selwood family.
“Adam was a dearly loved son, brother, husband and father and his loss is a tremendous blow for all who loved him,” Dillon said.
“On behalf of the AFL and all of our clubs, I want to send our love to his wife Fiona and their two children, to Maree and Bryce Selwood, Joel and Scott, and their families, and all of Adam’s many friends and colleagues and past team mates at West Coast and across football.
“Adam was a premiership player and outstanding contributor to the game at the highest level, and then latterly continued to work in the game in coaching and other roles, but first and foremost he was a young man who gave so much time and love to those around him.”
Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir opened his post-game press conference with a statement on Selwood's passing.
"I'd just like to pass my condolences on to the Selwood family," Longmuir said.
"I could only imagine what they're going through today and over the last four or five months.
"Thoughts go out to Fiona and the kids, Scott, Joel and their parents. I can only imagine what you're going through and a lot of people within the WA footy world are thinking of you tonight."
The Carlton Football Club also released a statement.
"Football clubs - and the game itself - are founded on providing support through community.
"It is with great sadness that we learn today of the passing of Adam Selwood.
"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Selwood family during this time of mourning."
The AFL Players’ Association said it was shattered by the news.
"On behalf of the AFLPA Board, members and staff, we wish to express our sincerest condolences to the Selwood family, Adam’s friends and former teammates, and offer our ongoing support to all members and families that need it." CEO Paul Marsh said.
"The Selwoods are a much loved and admired family and Adam was a man of enormous courage, spirit, and leadership – qualities that are universally admired. Adam was an AFLPA Delegate and then a Board member during his playing career and his impact on the AFLPA and our members will live on and his loss will be felt by so many.
"The AFLPA continues to offer free and confidential wellbeing support nationwide to all current and past player members as well as their significant others."
