  • All 18 selections were used across four rounds
  • Injury-plagued Essendon took four players from the state leagues

The 2025 AFL mid-season draft is complete after taking place on Wednesday night.

18 state league players around Australia got their chance to join AFL lists where clubs had available spots due to retirement and long-term injury.

Richmond VFL star Tom McCarthy joined West Coast as the No. 1 pick and he’ll hope to make an impact immediately at the Eagles as a half-back/midfielder.

McCarthy was one of seven VFL players to make it to the top level, with Werribee duo Zac Banch and Flynn Young getting drafted alongside North Melbourne VFL’s Cooper Trembath, Casey’s Caleb Lewis, Essendon VFL’s Oskar Smartt and Carlton VFL’s Liam McMahon.

The SANFL had six players get drafted in Glenelg’s Harrison Ramm and Oscar Adams, Norwood’s Jacob Newton, North Adelaide’s Ewan Mackinlay, South Adelaide’s Noah Howes and Central Districts’ Mani Liddy, while the WAFL had four players picked up.

Unlike previous years, all 18 picks were used and the chosen players will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Jai Newcombe, John Noble and Sam Durham among others who have become stars of the AFL after originally getting to the top-level through the MSD.
