Brisbane CEO Greg Swann has been announced as the AFL's new General Manager of Football Performance.
As reported by SEN journalist Tom Morris, Swann alerted the club today (Monday) that he will depart to take the role introduced by the AFL just last week.
Changes to CEO Andrew Dillon’s executive team were announced late last week, with Dillon confirming on Thursday that he had divided the league’s football department into multiple sectors to introduce a new Football Performance role.
Upon accepting the role, Swann will oversee matters surrounding MRO, umpiring, game analysis, player movement, laws of the game, innovation and club engagement within football.
As a result, Laura Kane’s role has been changed from Executive General Manager to Football Operations boss and she will now be responsible for concussion management, mental health response, and the delivery of the AFL, AFLW, VFL, VFLW and the Coates League seasons.
Swann is an established CEO within the AFL, earning life membership last season after completing 25 years in CEO roles across three clubs - Collingwood, Carlton and Brisbane.
SEN's David King gave Swann a glowing endorsement on SEN Fireball this morning, as rumours swirled surrounding the experienced CEO.
“I love it,” King said regarding Swann taking on the role.
“I think it’s terrific. I think you need a bit of grey hair in there that knows everyone in the competition, can pick up the phone, has great relationships.
“Sometimes you don’t necessarily have to have the answers yourself, if you can expand your contacts and find out ‘hey, what would you do here’ and just keep the temperature of the competition, I think that’s really important, to be across what’s happening.
“This is a man that’ll have an opinion on most things but not be too bullish about charging and being the reason.
“He’s more collaborative than most. It’s a great role.”
