Just weeks after winning the Premier league title with Liverpool and days after marrying his wife, Liverpool star Diogo Jota has been killed in a car crash.

According to Spanish authorities, the 28-year-old Portuguese winger was involved in an incident in Spain alongside his brother Andre Silva.

The Guardia Civil confirmed in a statement that the pair had been driving a Lamborghini and ran off the road after a tyre blowout while overtaking.

"It was in the early hours, 00:30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora," a statement from attending authorities said.

"The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed."

The tragedy comes just days after Jota married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso with whom he shares three children.

Jota signed with Liverpool in 2020 for a transfer fee of $41 million and has since made 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals.

During his time with Liverpool he won the Premier League (2025), The FA Cup (21-22) and a League Cup (21-22).

The Liverpool Football Club released this statement following the news of Jota's death:

"Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

"We will continue to provide them with our full support."

The Premier League released this statement:

"Everyone at the Premier League is shocked and devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre. Our sincerest condolences go to Diogo’s family, friends, Liverpool FC, and all their supporters at this heartbreaking time. Football has lost a champion who will be forever missed. We will continue to support our friends and colleagues at the club."

Former Premier League side Wolverhampton also released a statement regarding the tragic loss:

"We are heartbroken.

"Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him during his time at Wolves. The memories he created will never be forgotten.

"Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Diogo and his brother, Andre.

"You will be truly missed, and always remembered."

Another of Jota's former sides, Spanish giants Atlético Madrid stated:

"Atlético de Madrid is shocked by the tragic news of the passing of former club player Diogo Jota and his brother André. We send our deepest condolences to their family and loved ones. May they rest in peace."

Confirming Jota's death, Pedro Proenca, head of the Portuguese Football Federation said: "The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva, this morning, in Spain.

"Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 international caps for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy.

"On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel.

"The Portuguese Football Federation has already asked UEFA for a minute's silence, this Thursday, before the match of our national team with Spain, in the women's European Championship.

"The loss of Diogo and Andre Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese football and we will do everything to, daily, honor their legacy."

Portuguese and former FC Porto teammate Ruben Neves made a heart-breaking comment via Instagram, stating:

"They say we only lose people when we forget them. I will never forget you!"

Paying tribute to the star, former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher wrote: "Devastating news about Diogo Jota & his brother Andre this morning.

"Thoughts are with everyone of their family & friends, especially his wife Rute & their three lovely kids."

Jota's former side, Portguese giants FC Porto, released this statement, translated from Portuguese:

"FC Porto is in mourning.

"It is with shock and deep sorrow that we send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who was also our athlete in the youth ranks.

"Rest in peace."

UEFA also made comment, stating the following:

"On behalf of the European football community, we are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward, along with his brother André Silva.

"Our thoughts are with their family, friends, teammates and all those affected by this heartbreaking loss."

Fellow Premier League sides and clubs around the world have also taken to social media, noting the tragic loss of Diogo Jota.
