Voss carried extra security following threat

The sender of the threatening message directed at Carlton’s Michael Voss has been identified and banned.

The person, a Collingwood member, has been hit with a five-year ban from both the MCG and the AFL for the message sent to the MCG’s anti-social behaviour hotline.

As reported by the Herald Sun, the message sent during the Blues’ loss to the Magpies last Friday night stated the following:

"I'd like to report 23 missing persons and pre-emptively report the murder of Michael Voss."

The Magpies have released a statement on the matter.

“Collingwood supports the sanction issued to a Club Member following their misuse of the MCG’s anti-social behaviour hotline during the Round 17 match against Carlton,” read the statement.

“The Club is very disappointed by the Member’s actions which have resulted in a five-year ban from both the MCG and AFL – Collingwood will follow suit.

“Collingwood will not tolerate any threats to officials, supporters or individuals involved in our great game – such conduct is unacceptable and not representative of the Club or its values.”

The Head of AFL Integrity and Security Tony Keane said: "The anti-social hotline at venues is designed to ensure everyone attending the match can do so in a safe and inclusive manner, and the majority of times this service is used appropriately.

"We understand there is passion in the game however the text message in question sent to the MCG hotline on Friday crossed the line.

"Regardless of the intent, no coach, player, official, staff member or fan deserves to be threatened in such a way, and now that patron has lost the privilege of attending the footy."

Channel Seven journalist Mitch Cleary announced that the Carlton coach carried extra security ahead of the Blues' Thursday night matchup with Brisbane at Marvel Stadium.

"As a result of this, the AFL and Carlton have teamed up for extra security around Michael Voss," Clearly told 7News pre-game.

"He will have a few extra security guards following his every move here at the match tonight.

"The AFL's Head of Integrity Tony Keane also paid a visit to the Carlton rooms before the match, so the AFL not taking any risks tonight around Michael Voss."
