The former Fremantle captain succeeds Tom Harley who has joined Andrew Dillon at the AFL as the league’s chief operating officer.

Pavlich had been linked with replacing Paul Marsh as AFLPA boss but it seems the Swans swooped and got their man.

“It is a big decision to uproot the family and bring them across the country to Sydney," he said.

"But I am thrilled to be offered.

“The Sydney Swans is a highly successful, well respected and well managed football club.

“It is a big decision to uproot the family and bring them across the country to Sydney, but I am thrilled to be offered the opportunity to lead this great and highly professional club.

“I’m looking forward to working with the clubs leaders and playing groups to continue the success of this iconic club over the coming years.”

The 43-year-old kicked 700 goals in 353 games for Fremantle, won six best and fairests, is a six-time All-Australian, was Dockers captain for nine years and is a member of the AFL Hall of Fame.
