22:24 - Matt Rowell is crowned the winner of the 2025 AFL Brownlow Medal

A phenomenal season, topped off with a fitting award.

26 disposals, nine tackles and eight clearances per game, Rowell anchored the Suns' first ever finals run alongside captain Noah Anderson.

Claiming his maiden All-Australian, the former No.1 pick becomes the second Sun behind Gary Ablett Jnr to win the AFL's most coveted award.

At 24 years of age, it's only the beginning for the superstar.

With 39 votes, Rowell cleared favourite Nick Daicos by seven total votes, leading Bailey Smith (29), Jordan Dawson (27) and Andrew Brayshaw (26) to win the medal in his sixth AFL season.

18:49pm - Simpson predicts three-way tie

Earlier in the day on SEN WA Breakfast, former West Coast coach Adam Simpson has predicted that we will have a repeat of the 2003 Brownlow Medal with a three way tie for Australian football's top honour.

The 2018 Premiership coach thinks that Adelaide's Jordan Dawson, Collingwood's Nick Daicos and the Gold Coast's Matt Rowell will all claim their maiden Brownlow.

18:42pm - Betts gives Brownlow prediction

The legendary Eddie Betts has also stopped by to give his Brownlow prediciton whilst sporting some Patrick Dangerfield socks with his suit.

Similarly to Ben Cousins, Betts thinks that Nick Daicos will be awarded the medal.

But he wouldn't be suprised if Adelaide's Jordan Dawson claims it.

“I think Nick Daicos, but Jordan Dawson, he’s a smokey," Betts declared.

"He’s played some good footy consistently.

"And who is going to pinch his votes?"

18:35pm - Merrett breaks silence amid trade rumours

Essendon captain Zach Merrett has spoken to the media amid rumours of his potential departure from the Bombers.

Speaking with Channel 7, Merrett acknowledged that he had spoken to the club about it, but no decision on his future has not been made as of yet.

"I have had great dialogue with the club. The decisions haven't been made yet." Merrett said.

"(I'm) still working through that (if I'm asking for a trade). Things will be clearer in the coming weeks."

18:30pm - Cousins gives his Brownlow prediciton

2005 Brownlow Medallist Ben Cousins would stop by the SEN broadcast area to chat with the boys ahead of the count.

As he was leaving, he was asked his tip for the Brownlow with the former West Coast and Richmond player wanting Collingwood’s Nick Daicos to do one better this year.

“I would like to see Nick Daicos win one,” Cousins said on SEN’s live coverage of the Brownlow.

“He’s going to, but I think it has been another good year worthy of it.

“I think if he doesn’t then maybe the two boys from Gold Coast in Rowell and Anderson.

“If one of those can get the lion share of the votes, then they’ve had good enough years.”

13:05pm - Whateley's 12-leg multi

Gerard Whateley’s Brownlow Medal multi is BACK for another crack in 2025.

Whateley had a fairly safe 10-leg multi for most club votes last year with two additional legs for anyone who wished to follow along.

In the 10-leg multi, only two legs missed - Christian Petracca beat Max Gawn to most Melbourne votes and Adam Treloar beat Marcus Bontempelli to most Western Bulldogs votes.

Of the additional two legs, one lobbed (Luke Davies-Uniacke most votes at North Melbourne) and one didn’t (Jason Horne-Francis most votes at Port Adelaide - second to Zak Butters).

This year Whateley has provided a 12-leg multi, but in three parts. An initial 6-leg base multi, an extra 5-leg multi to bolster your price and a further one leg to boost the odds.

But he has done so with a proviso…

“I’ve never got this in our seven years together. This is year number eight,” he said on SEN.

“So you should not do this under any circumstances. But it’s a long night and you just want a bit of interest here and there.”

6-leg base multi

Brisbane: Hugh McCluggage
Carlton: George Hewett
Fremantle: Caleb Serong
Gold Coast: Noah Anderson
Hawthorn: Jai Newcombe
Western Bulldogs: Marcus Bontempelli

Odds: $5.48

5-leg percentages

Essendon: Zach Merrett
Geelong: Bailey Smith
Melbourne: Max Gawn
Port Adelaide: Zak Butters
Richmond: Tim Taranto

Odds (with initial 6 legs): $7.05

The special sauce

GWS: Finn Callaghan

Odds (with initial 11 legs): $24.69

11:16am Whateley and Bucks seedings

Gerard Whateley and Nathan Buckley named their Brownlow seedings on SEN with No 4 needing to be a “roughie” for the medal.

BUCKS:

4: Marcus Bontempelli – I think he will poll extremely well despite missing the first five weeks of the season. I think he’s a sneaky chance.

3: Bailey Smith – I don’t think he will get Geelong B&F but maybe he’s a bit flashy and the headband makes him stand out

2: Noah Anderson I think he will poll extremely well even with Matt Rowell taking some votes away from him

1: I’ve got Nick Daicos

WHATELEY:

I did exactly the same four so I’ll go some variations.

4 Bontempelli is 100-1 chance, so I’ll go Finn Callaghan. He’s my other roughie. He won’t win it but I think he will poll so well, I like him in the Giants

3 Bailey Smith

2 Noah Anderson

1 Nick Daicos

Nick Daicos

10:45am Smith in for a big night?

Geelong assistant coach James Kelly joined the SENWA boys this morning, here's what he had to say about Bailey Smith's chances tonight.

"I hope he does really well (at the Brownlow) – it’s really good for Bailey.

"The things you mention that pop up; people forget or they probably don’t know how hard he works. He has been an amazing resource for younger players and has a great relationship with Paddy and younger guys.

"He bridges across the whole group. He’s a bit different to the guys we have but he’s brought a great energy and life in amongst the group.

"We’re really fortunate he wanted to come here. I hope he goes really well tonight."

Champion Data has revealed their top five Brownlow prediction ahead of Monday night’s count.

Their predicted vote system looks back on statistical categories that past winners have excelled in, as well as the individual player’s past voting history.

After crunching the numbers, analyst Daniel Hoyne revealed that Champion Data has Collingwood’s Nick Daicos taking home ‘Charlie’ after coming so close in the last two seasons, and by a fair margin.

“Our prediction looks back and has a look at what stacks up with previous winners,” Hoyne said on SEN Breakfast.

“Things like disposals, contested possessions, clearances and handballers as opposed to kickers usually get the job done. As well as if you’ve been in a winning team.

“Then also finally your own individual history. Are you a poller or are you not a poller?

“With that in mind, Noah Anderson comes in at five with 23 votes, Tom Green is on 23 votes as well, Jordan Dawson is on 24 votes, Matt Rowell on 26 and Nick Daicos on 34.

“There's a bit of a gap there.”

While the system is backing Daicos comfortably, Hoyne himself isn’t as certain given that Daicos doesn’t stack up in one key statistical category that each of the past 17 Brownlow medallists have dominated in – contested possessions.

“But I've got a saying which I've probably repeated too often over the last couple of years, I'll back history until history changes,” Hoyne said.

“The interesting part is that the last 17 Brownlow medallists have all ranked top six in contested possessions.

“With that in mind, the only contenders this year for that to play out again for an 18th season is Tom Green, Caleb Serong, and Matt Rowell.

“The other contenders don't fit into that category for this year. So, we've talked about this year being as the game changer, that it's all about ball use and transition and ball movement, as opposed to pure contest and clearance work.

“Whether or not the umpires jump on board that bandwagon this year, or if it takes them a little bit longer to recognize and appreciate that aspect of the game, we will see.”
