In the space of just 39 days, Ange Postecoglou has been hired and now sacked as Nottingham Forest manager following a tumultuous period at the club.

Having taken over from Nuno Espírito Santo in September, the Australian was only in charge for eight games.

But in those matches, he failed to win a single game with a three-nil defeat to Chelsea at the City Ground overnight, being the final straw for owner Evangelos Marinakis.

In a club statement, minutes after the match, it was confirmed that the 60-year-old's departure was performance-based.

Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect.

With this sacking, he now has the unwanted record of the shortest time in charge of a Premier League side as a permanent manager, having beaten Les Reed's record by just one day.

Reaction has come swiftly since the news of his sacking broke.

Speaking post game, Forest captain Ryan Yates admitted that the news was not a 'massive surprise' considering their form.

"When you’re having such bad results it’s never a massive surprise," he said.

"It’s disappointing for us as players. We can do more, we can do better.

"We need to dust ourselves down really quickly whatever steps the club take we need to be fully behind it. We owe it to the fans to do everything to turn it around."

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca also spoke on the news in his post-game press conference saying that he felt sorry for the Australian.

"I feel really sorry. It's always a shame," Maresca told TNT Sports.

"But we say many times this is a business where you need to win games. For all of us it's the same consequence."

Reacting on air as the news came in, NBC Sports commentator and former Middlesbrough player Robbie Mustoe felt that the decision was inevitable.

But he acknowledged that bringing in Postecoglou, whose attacking and high-intensity game plan is the complete opposite of Espírito Santo's counter-attacking style, was a mistake by the owner.

‘It was coming,” the Englishman explained.

“You can’t go on losing games like that, expecting a change which is going to be a big change in style that would be successful, that might take weeks or months.

“The owner Marinakis has done a good job with this football club; they’re in the Premier League, they’re in the Europa League.

“But this decision, the whole Nuno thing and hiring a guy that is 180 (degrees) to that style of play, expecting that to work quickly, it has been a disaster, and this is no surprise.”
