Sam Konstas may have just sealed his Ashes selection fate being dismissed for just 10 after leaving one on middle stump.
In what is regarded as the final audition before selectors name their squad for the opening Test in Perth on November 21, Konstas showed poor judgement in NSW's clash against QLD.
Since scoring an impressive century for Australia A back in September, Konstas has managed to record scores of just four, 14, 40, zero, 53, 20 and 10.
Who opens against England later this month has been the topic of an ongoing debate since Australia lost the World test Championship to South Africa in June.
Gerard Whateley said this latest dismissal means Konstas will not be a part of the Australian Ashes squad.
"Sam Konstas has demonstrated just how far away he is from sustainable, dependable, repeatable cricket as this fate has got him," Whateley said on SEN.
"It hit the top of middle stump where the batter chooses to leave and it canons into middle stump.
"For Konstas, he has looked scrambled this Shield season. He doesn't have the foundations of his game in place.
"I now agree with those elder statesman saying 'leave him be for a while, let him find himself in Shield cricket without the rigours of every time he goes out to bat it's about selection.
"He is the future, he just turned 20 but now it's time to leave him be.
"Perhaps the naming of the squad - which he certainly wont be part of now - will be that pressure release."
