Piastri's brutal blow: What Brazil GP means for title race

  • Lando Norris wins in Brazil
  • Oscar Piastri finishes 5th despite penalties
  • Max Verstappen drives from pitlane to 3rd

F1 fans were treated to one of the most incredible, gripping and chaotic Sao Paulo Grands Prix in recent memory.

Brazil always delivers, but Oscar Piastri will rue a sixth lap error that could well have ended his hopes of winning the world title.

The race has already been put under safety car restrictions, and fresh off the restart from Gabriel Bortoleto’s crash, the Aussie bumped into Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli with that impact forcing Charles Leclerc off the track.

That incident subsequently ended the Ferrari driver's race and Piastri copped a 10-second penalty.

"Was he squeezed? Was he over ambitious? Was he in control," they're the questions the stewards will have asked, Martin Brundle said on Sky F1.

And that was just six laps in.

Lewis Hamilton was later retired from the race ending a miserable weekend for Ferrari.

Incredibly, Piastri recovered from the penalty to get himself back in contention for decent points, finishing fifth.

“I don’t think so (no regrets). I had a clear opportunity, and I went for it," Piastri said of the incident after the race which has also earned him two points on his license.

“The other two braked late and there was a lock up into the corner because I could see Kimi was not going to give me space.

“I can’t disappear, but it is what it is. Just try and get the most out of it that I can.

“Today the penalty was one thing but I don’t think the pace was at a level I wanted it to be.

"The first stint was tough. I’m trying to get back on top of things with that. We tried to have as best a weekend that we could.”

Also in Piastri's corner was Leclerc.

“Oscar was optimistic but Kimi knew that Oscar was on the inside, he did the corner like Oscar was not there," the Ferrari driver said.

“For me the blame is not all on Oscar, this could have been avoided. I am frustrated.

“I am not angry with Oscar or Kimi, these things happen but I would not go as far as saying this is all Oscar’s fault.”

Max Verstappen enjoyed an incredible race, driving from pitlane to finish on the podium and ensure he remains a daunting shadow in the race for the title.

The results mean Norris has stretched his lead at the top to be 24 points clear of Piastri and 49 over Verstappen.

Mathematically George Russell is out of contention meaning it is a three driver race with as many Grands Prix left on the calendar as well as one sprint.

F1 returns in a fortnight for the Las Vegas race.

5:43am THE POINTS

Title race points:

Norris - 390
Piastri - 366
Verstappen - 341

If I'm McLaren, while there is plenty to celebrate, I'd be somewhat terrified of the fact Verstappen (albeit with a new power unit) started in the pitlane and only finished 10-seconds behind Norris. That car is insane.

5:40am RESULTS

Norris wins the Sao Paulo Grand Prix and this could be the penultimate nail in the Piastri world championship coffing - if you get what I mean. That crash will haunt him for some time, the debate will rage about whether he was culpable or squeezed.

Antonelli in second and Verstappen complete the podium. Let's have a look at the points in the title race.

5:31am Norris leads

A moment for Kimi Antonelli in second who has driven like a dream. A rookie I was not too kind about at the start of the season. Driving a sublime race and on course for his best ever finish in a race. Let's hope he's not looking in his mirrors too much because one thing you dont want with five laps to go is to see Max Verstappen's Red Bull right behind you.

5:27am standings with 6 laps

Norris is the race leader and Piastri is back in 5th which given the 10-second penalty is fairly incredible. Oscar is preparing and getting into range to make a move on Russell for 4th. All top drivers are on mediums except Max who is on soft.

__5:25am Verstappen is FLYING __

He started the race FROM THE PITLANE! He is now making moves on George Russell on a new set of tyres and is third in the race. He is on course to finish second. Max Verstappen, take a bow.
