Former England captain Michael Vaughan is worried that this team might not be able to turn this Ashes series around.
The Poms were demoralised by Australia inside two days in Perth after holding a very strong position in their second innings.
Enter Travis Head who smashed 123 in a session on Day 2 to give the Aussies an eight-wicket triumph in a crazy Test match which saw 32 wickets fall for 673 runs in 140.3 overs.
It could be the type of result that crushes the English and Vaughan is intrigued to see how Ben Stokes and his men respond.
“I hope they prove me wrong, but I would be amazed if they turn it round from here,” Vaughan wrote in his column for The Telegraph.
“Australia cannot believe their luck because they were on the ropes. Cracks were opening in the batting and the team dynamic. We’ve seen in the past that if you get a chance to widen those cracks you have to take it.
“England haven’t.
“Australia are very good at regrouping and putting things back together. It took them just five hours.
“Now, all the cracks are in the England team.”
England’s Ashes collapse in Perth was far from the start they would have hoped for, however as English great Sir Geoffrey Boycott writes, it’s far from surprising.
In an editorial critiquing the English side off the back of their fall in the first Ashes Test on Saturday, Boycott refused to hold back on the “stupid” side of current day.
From ‘Bazball’, to brainless play and everything in between, Boycott turned his attention to captain Ben Stokes in a damning piece published by The Telegraph in the UK.
Titled 'I cannot take this stupid England team seriously anymore', it's safe to say Boycott was far from pleased with the cricket on display in Perth.
“Before this series started Ben Stokes told the world that any ex-players who criticised England or had a different opinion were “has-beens” because Test cricket had changed and the past was irrelevant,” Boycott wrote.
“Well, from this has-been the message is simple: when you keep throwing away Test matches by doing the same stupid things it is impossible to take you seriously.
“They never learn, because they never listen to anyone outside their own bubble, because they truly believe their own publicity.
“Brainless batting and bowling lost England the match.
“Bazball, bad judgement, overconfidence, whatever the reason, it makes winning matches difficult. Against top teams like India and Australia it is a huge factor in losing.”
The second Test takes place at the Gabba in Brisbane from Thursday, December 4.
