In the most bizarre of circumstances in the Premier League, Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye has been sent off for hitting his own teammate.
Just 13 minutes into Everton’s clash with Manchester United, Gueye engaged in a heated exchange with centre back Michael Keane, going face-to-face with his teammate and waving his arms in fury.
Keane shoved Gueye, who promptly slapped Keane across the face, with referee Tony Harrington issuing the 36-year-old a straight red card in the early stages of Monday night’s contest.
Incredibly, Everton would go on to win 1-0 at Old Trafford, becoming the first team in Premier League history to win at the storied stadium with a man sent off.
Gueye posted to his Instagram story shortly after the final whistle, apologising to the players and fans for his on-field actions.
Everton Manager David Moyes spoke on the incident post-match.
“I’m surprised I think if nothing happened, I don’t think anybody in the stadium would’ve been surprised. I thought the ref could’ve maybe taken more time to think about it.
"I’m getting told the rules of the game means that if you slap even your own player or you lift an arm you’re in trouble. But you know there’s another side of it — I quite like my players fighting each other and getting annoyed with each other if they’ve played a bad ball or made a bad action.
"If you want a winning team with the resilience and toughness that got us the result, you’re going to have to play that way. Anyone who has been a footballer will tell you that quite often you get angry with your teammates.
“He’s apologized in the dressing room. for the sending-off He’s praised the players incredibly for their performance and thanked them for it.”
A 29th minute strike from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was the difference, with Everton now level on points with United in mid-table.
