Josh Hazlewood's bid to recover from injury in time to play a role in the Ashes is over.

An injury to his Achilles last week has ended any hopes of returning to face England and he will instead focus on being fit for the Twenty20 World Cup next February and March.

Prior to the Achilles issue, Hazlewood was ruled out of the opening Tests because of a hamstring concern.

While he was pushing to return later in the series after bowling in the NSW nets in Sydney in recent weeks, his body simply hasn't allowed him a clear run this summer.

Coach Andrew McDonald was shattered for Hazlewood after the quick looked primed to have a big say on the series thanks to his early white-ball form.

"No, I don't think he'll take part in the series now," McDonald said at a press conference.

"You can go with that one. It's a totally separate injury (to the hamstring issue); it's somewhere lower in the calf to Achilles region.

"He will be out of the series and his preparation will then shift towards the World Cup, which is an incredibly important campaign for us.

"But unfortunately Josh won't be a part of the Ashes, and (we're) really flat for him.

"A couple of setbacks we didn't see coming. We thought he'd play a huge part in the series.

"But (we) really feel for him that he won't get that opportunity."

Australia captain Pat Cummins is set to return for the third Test in Adelaide with his side 2-0 up in the series.
