England manage to survive the day and will take a modicum of momentum into Day 3 after a 45-run partnership; however, it’s Australia who hold the aces thanks to some disciplined bowling in extreme heat.
The return of captain Pat Cummins proved vital as the skipper took 3/54, including Joe Root for the 12th time in Test cricket.
Scott Boland delivered an immense spell of 2/1 off five overs, including four maidens where he dismissed Will Jacks and Brydon Carse while Alex Carey gloved five catches.
Without Ben Stokes, England would be absolutely nowhere. It was a captain’s innings that was timely and predictable.
Now with Jofra Archer at the crease, the Aussies will have to be careful not to take the foot off the gas before they return to the crease to build their lead.
“Pretty entertaining day, but Australia’s way.” Damien Fleming surmised on SEN Cricket
5:37pm - Stokes finds partner in Archer
England 8/207 - Stokes 41, Jofra Archer 21
England pass 200 after a handy partnership between Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes.
This pair have provided much-needed resistance to the continual loss of wicket that was leading England to an early end to their first innings before the end of play on Day 2.
But with 20 minutes left in play, they should be able to see off the day.
"They're both sending a really strong message back to the dressing room here," said Katich.
Archer survived a huge lunge from Marnus Labuschagne at deep square as he continues to look for runs in the shadows of the day.

4:53pm - Boland goes again as Carse's castle toppled
England 8/168 - Stokes 31, Jofra Archer to the crease
Another one falls as England's tail is well and truly exposed now.
Scotty Boland goes straight through the wide open gate between Brydon Carse's bat and pad and sends him on his way.
Surely it's time for Stokes to get a bit more aggressive with Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue his only partners left.

4:44pm - Boland gets his first as Jacks departs
England 7/168 - Stokes 31, Brydon Carse to the crease
Will Jacks, the last recognised batsman in the English side edges to Alex Carey keeping up to the stumps.
He is gone for six.
Alex Carey takes his fifth catch of the innings, he is having one hell of a series.
Brydon Carse joins his skipper at the crease, the weight of the world is lying on Stokes' shoulders it seems.

4:09pm - De ja vu ends in Smith's demise
England 6/159 - Stokes 28, Will Jacks to the crease
Yet another umpire review has ended in the wicket of Jamie Smith for 22.
The keeper swung at a back-of-a-length ball from Pat Cummins and toed it to Alex Carey according to Snicko, despite Smith being prepared to review if he was given out.
Bharat Sundaresan noted the disappointment written all over captain Ben Stokes' face as Smith fell cheaply yet again to a poor shot.
"It's just wild swinging, it's exactly what he did in Perth. Its a low percentage shot... Stokes' reaction sums it up and sums up today's play," Sundaresan said on SEN Cricket.
"For those that compared him to Adam Gilchrist - wash your mouth out."
Simon Katich added how Bazball has met it's match in Australia.
"They are not good enough to play Bazball in Australia... it's been proven. They are not good enough," Katich said.
"That reaction from him should have been heard by the entire team."
3:56pm - Yet another bizarre review as Smith survives
England 5/149 - Smith 16, Stokes 24
A short ball barrage had begun from Pat Cummins to Jamie Smith who pumped him for six off the first ball of the over with a cracking pull shot.
Two balls later the keeper-batsman fended at one that was caught by Usman Khawaja in the slips.
Umpire Nitin Menon gave no decision but went upstairs to review whether the catch was taken cleanly or not.
During the review, Snicko revealed the spike was from Smith's helmet but the Aussies questioned whether or not that was what the initial review was for.
Either way, Smith survives, rightfully.
3:42 - How long can this duo bat?
England 5/132 - Stokes 19, Smith 5
The players are back in the middle and it's clear that England are trying to bed in.
For the opposition to have any real chance, both or one of these two batters must at least get to Stumps.
With the rate England's scoring at, they won't be near Australia's total come the end of the day though.
The question is, can they save their side from another disaster?
3:14 - Green almost strikes again before the break
England 5/132 - Stokes 19, Smith 5
Cam Green gets one over in before the Tea break, and almost removes Jamie Smith for a duck as the keeper-bat edged past Josh Inglis in gully.
Damien Fleming loved that session from the Aussies as they removed England's best two bats after they both got themselves in.
"Great session for teh Australians again, Stokes and Brook batted tough, the England captain was dour," Fleming said.
"Pat Cummins has captained really well... they'll be keen to run through England in this last session and maybe have a little bat."
One more wicket now for the Aussies to crack the tail.

3:02pm - Green does the job!
England 5/127 - Stokes 19, Smith to the crease
Now Brook goes!
Cam Green gets Harry Brook out caught behind with a peach of a delivery.
The bowling change works, with the big all-rounder bowling at 140km/h to remove the dangerous Brook for 45.
"It's fast, it's from 6 foot 7 and it's brilliant!" - Damien Fleming.
"That is in the avenue of aprehension, that is a cracker from Green! It's a bonus for the Australians to be able to call on Cameron Green."
2:57pm - Successful review for Brook
England 4/125 - Brook 44, Stokes 19
That looked like the big wicket for Australia, but Harry Brook gets a reprieve on review!
The right-hander was given out caught behind down the leg side off the bowling of Nathan Lyon, but on review, the ball only clipped his pad before landind in Alex Carey's hands.
A successful review from England who still hold all three of their reviews.
2:45pm - Green leaves the field after diving stop
England 4/118 - Brook 43, Stokes 17
Cameron Green has left the ground after stopping a Harry Brook slicing cut in gully.
The all-rounder already had his left thumb taped, and while the ball went straight into his palm on the bounce, he immediately left the ground after stopping the ball.
Hopefully this is nothing serious as the Aussies may need Green to ball shortly as England continue to build.
2:19pm - Turning into a grind as England get to 100
England 4/100 - Brook 29, Stokes 13
England have put the slows on their innings here as they hope to rebuild.
Ben Stokes has scored just 13 from 45 balls, while Harry Brook is on 29 from 35 balls, which is slow going for the explosive right-hander.
This is anti BazBall, but exactly what England must do this session to get back into it and put some overs into the legs of the Aussie bowlers.
1:54pm - Starc hits Stokes
England 4/83 - Stokes 5, Brook 16
Mitchell Starc has struck Ben Stokes on the head with a brutal bouncer.
The ball rose sharply off a short length and collected Stokes on his lid as he swayed to get out of the way.
The England skipper didn't go down, but a new helmet was brought out as the guard on the back of his grill was broken.
"Brutal bouncer! What did Stokes there is that it pitched on middle and moved away from him." - Adam Collins.
1:43pm - Stokes settling in
England 4/82 - Stokes 5, Brook 15
The England captain called on his team during the weak to show some 'dog', and he has the perfect opportunity to be a leading example of that here.
The skipper is 5 from 19, and with Harry Brook still at the crease, England need them to bat for some time to get them back into this match and the series.
If either of them go cheaply to something lacking disclipline, then look out.
An interesting next hour is ahead.

1:23pm - Cummins gets Root
England 4/71 - Brook 10, Stokes to the crease
The massive wicket! It turns out, England blinked.
Cummins gets Root for 19 caught behind, with this one carrying to Alex Carey.
Another brilliant length ball from the Aussie skipper who does enough to catch Root's edge.
"Pat Cummins, he just keeps asking questions in and around the off stump. Such is the pressure that builds with Cummins giving everything." - Simon Katich.
"12th time Pat Cummins has gotten Joe Root in Test cricket. What a weapon he is returning to the team 2-0 up." - Gerard Whateley.
No other bowler has removed Root more than 11 times in Test cricket.
12 - PAT CUMMINS
11 - Mitch Starc
11 - Jasprit Bumrah
10 - Josh Hazlewood
9 - Ravi Jadeja
8 - Nathan Lyon
1:20pm - Who blinks first?
England 3/69 - Root 17, Brooks 10
This is the partnership here for England. Root is coming off a ton and Brook is absolutely due for a big score.
In prime batting conditions and serious heat, these two couldn't ask for a better time to bat.
Is a big score on the horizon for one of them? They look to be doing things pretty easy.
12:30 - Aussies claim three before Lunch
England 3/59 - Root 11, Brook 6
England have made it to Lunch with this pair, but the Aussies would be thrilled with their first session.
If Joe Root had been given out, the English would be in all sorts of trouble. There's no doubt that decision will be talked about going forward.
If the Aussies can strike early in the second session here, they could really get on top and just about win the Ashes today.
For England, this pair simply has to put on a big partnership to allow the middle/lower order to push towards Australia's first innings of 371.
12:14pm - Root gets a reprieve!
England 3/42 - Root 1, Brook to the crease
Joe Root is caught behind off the bowling of Scott Boland, but the third umpire has decided that it's bounced before reaching Alex Carey's gloves.
That is incredibly unlucky, the benefit of the doubt has gone to the batsman there.
"It's virtually impossible to tell. The benefit of the doubt goes to the batsman." - Adam Collins.
"It’s close to the ground. That last zoom in frame was enough for them. They will watch this over and over. You couldn’t tell if it’s caught a bit of grass before the gloves."

12:11pm - Lyon is on fire!
England 3/42 - Root 1, Brook to the crease
What a ball by Nathan Lyon to remove Ben Duckett for 29.
It's an absolute peach from the off-spinner as he beats the left hander's edge, with the ball simply lifting the bail from off stump.
It's two wickets in his first over, and Lyon now passes Glenn McGrath to become Australia's second-leading Test wicket-taker of all-time with 564 poles.
"That is the stuff you dream of as a finger spinner, boy oh boy what a piece of bowling!" - Adam Collins.
708 - Shane Warne
564 - NATHAN LYON
563 - Glenn McGrath
420 - Mitch Starc
355 - Dennis Lillee
313 - Mitchell Johnson
310 - Pat Cummins
310 - Brett Lee
295 - Josh Hazlewood
291 - Craig McDermott

12:08 - Pope shells one off Lyon
England 2/41 - Duckett 29, Root to the crease
Oh no, that is a shocking dismissal for Ollie Pope, as he clips a Nathan Lyon ball from outside off to Josh Inglis at mid-wicket.
He goes for just 3 off 10, but really that was a gift for the Aussies.
"What is he doing... he must have known mid-wicket was there, as he throws his head back." - Damien Fleming.
"He just offered Nathan Lyon an early Christmas gift. He's just thrown away his Test career in the immediate future there." - Bharat Sundaresan.

11:57 - Cummins strikes first
England 1/37 - Duckett 28, Pope to the crease
Pat Cummins has struck in his fourth over, removing Zak Crawley for 9, caught behind by Alex Carey.
The ball was an absolute beauty, pitching on a perfect line and length before kicking away to grab the outside edge.
"Welcome to the Ashes captain Pat, into the safe gloves of Carey. Crawley goes for 9," Gerard Whateley. "What. A. Ball."
"That's a fast leg-cutter, wobble seam, there's not much Crawley can do about that... it was perfect length, excellent line... if he can replicate that ball, he's going to get a lot of wickets." - Damien Fleming.
"Unmatched Test cricket. Cummins was up before it got to Carey. Extra bounce, that is tough Test match cricket."
11:45 - Sweltering heat in Adelaide
England 0/26 - Duckett 21, Crawley 5
It’s getting hotter in Adelaide, with the current Bureau of Meteorology reading for Adelaide coming in at 36.9 degrees celsius.
With temps set to reach 39, the Aussies will be doing some extremely hard work in the middle, particularly as England's openers settle in.
SEN Cricket's Bharat Sundaresan described the conditions as 'the kind of atrocious heat that can make you delirious'.
11:22 - Starc doesn't get a first over wicket
England 0/1 - Crawley 1, Duckett 0
England survive Mitchell Starc's first over, but it's good signs for the big left-arm quick who was immediately in rhythm as he beat the bat twice.
"Every ball that over was in the mid 140s. Excellent start Mitchell Starc." - Adam Collins.
Pat Cummins is now on for his first over of the series.
11:06am - Archer bags five as Aussies bowled out
Australia 371 - Boland 14
Jofra Archer has claimed five wickets, with his final scalp Nathan Lyon LBW on 9.
The Aussies were able to add an important 45 runs this morning, but the two early wickets mean the English will be able to put their feet up on Day 2 as the Aussies toil in the heat.
Archer finished with 5/53 from 20.2 overs.
"Every session he's bowled in he's played a role, he's earned the right to receive the applause of the Adelaide crowd." - Adam Collins.
11:00am - Aussie tail wagging
Australia 9/370 - Lyon 8, Boland 14
The Aussies are adding some really valuable runs here for the final wicket.
Both Boland and Lyon are scoring at ease and at some pace.
England will want to wrap this up quickly... but at least their batters will be licking their lips knowing that tailenders can bat so comfortably on this surface.

10:40am - Starc goes
Australia 9/348 - Lyon 1, Boland to the crease
Starc goes for 54, bowled by Jofra Archer!
The big quick added 21 runs incredibly quickly, and things looked like they were going downhill for the visitors before that dismissal.
Archer has every chance of picking up a 5-for here as well.
10:38am - Another fifty for Starc!
Mitchell Starc has raised the bat again! It's the second time he's passed fifty in two knocks.
"The summer of Starc continues, menacing with the ball and free-spirited with the bat," Gerard Whateley said.
"It's a beautifully struck fifty!"
10:35am - Archer's speeds down
Australia 8/343 - Starc 49, Lyon 0
We know Jofra Archer sometimes starts slowly, and that was certainly the case on Day 2.
The quick went for eight runs in his first over, with Mitchell Starc easily accounting for him as his pace was clearly down from Day 1.
Simon Katich described his first over as "throwdowns", let's see if he can ramp things up from here.
10:30am - Day 2. Let's go.
Australia 8/326 - Starc 33, Lyon 0
Jofra Archer has the ball to start Day 2.
Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon are out in the middle. The question is, how long can the Aussies last?
At 8/326, anything above 350 would be a win for the home side. England will want to get off their feet as quickly as they can, particularly with temperatures set to soar to 39 degrees today.
England have a fairly new ball in their hand too. Follow here live today!
10:10am - England has review reinstated
SEN Cricket's Tom Morris is reporting that England has had its review reinstated after the Alex Carey DRS howler.
9:45am - What Carey thought immediately after snicko howler
Alex Carey was thrilled when he knew he got away with edging behind on 72 on Day 1.
While a spike showed up on snicko, the frames didn’t match up, allowing Carey to continue on with his innings.
Carey revealed his first thought upon that realisation once it showed up on the big screen with SEN Cricket ahead of Day 2.
“Awesome,” Carey said.
“It was straight back to the crease and away we go again.
“You need a bit of luck in cricket sometimes, and yesterday I got that luck.
“I think once you see the umpire doesn’t give it and the third umpire doesn’t give it. You move on pretty quickly.
“For me it’s staying in the moment, staying present and getting on with the job.”
9:10am - Why Bharat would rather be in England's position
Despite missing a golden opportunity to bowl Australia out cheaply on Day 1, Bharat Sundaresan would rather be England heading into Day 2 given what lies ahead in Adelaide.
“I think I would still rather be England,” Sundaresan said on SEN The New Ball.
“On a pitch where Australia won the toss and elected to bat, they’ve done well.
“It's been a really good pitch to bat on, but it hasn't been a flat beauty.
“I thought the pitch in Brisbane was flatter, but having said that, I do feel like if you are England, you would take the eight wickets.
“Yes, from 4/94 and 5 for 150 odd, England might have felt like they should have bowled out Australia cheaper… but if they can get the two wickets early on a 39-degree day (it will be tough for Australia).
“Pat Cummins coming back into the series, playing his first Test since July and first professional game, this has to be England’s day. This is make or break for them.
“But would I want to be England at the end of the day if they mess this up? No, because that would be it. If they mess this up today, England, it's all over.”
8:30 - Update on Steve Smith
Cricket Australia has given an update on Steve Smith after he was pulled from Australia's XI before play on Day 1 due to illness.
According to the governing body, Smith saw a specialist on Wednesday to receive further advice on his vertigo-like symptoms.
The superstar batter is still in Adelaide with the team despite the illness, and hopes to play in Melbourne in eight days' time.
"We've got an update from Cricket Australia on Steve Smith as we speak right now this morning," Morris said on SEN's The New Ball.
"They're saying Steve Smith is still being monitored, saw a specialist yesterday just to get further advice about the condition, which is vertigo, he's still very hopeful of playing in Melbourne and is still in Adelaide with the team
"So, that's a concern."
