Off the back of her first Grand Slam singles win, Australian Taylah Preston has reflected on what she describes as a ‘special’ win.

The 20-year-old now becomes the third Aussie woman in as many days to secure a first round win at Kia Arena, having defeated China’s Shuai Zhang in three sets (6-3, 2-6, 6-3).

Speaking in her press conference post-match, the Western Australian was glad to have gotten her first Grand Slam win at Melbourne Park.

“I think it makes it more special,” Preston noted.

“Having done it here at home, in Australia, but obviously a first Grand Slam win at any Grand Slam is special.

“It takes a lot of hard work, and I’ve been working really hard, so it’s nice to see it somewhat pay off.”

The win is the culmination of her strong preparation leading into the tournament, which included her semi-final appearance at the Hobart International last week.

She also believed that playing as many matches on the ITF tour within Australia from last September also played a role in her win.

“Towards the end of last year, I played a lot of matches,” she explained.

“I dropped down a couple levels just to get my match count up because I wasn’t playing a lot.

“I think it really helped that I had a really good pre-season in Brisbane and then starting the year off in Brisbane and last week in Hobart to be able to get a couple of really great wins under my belt really helped with my confidence leading into this week.”

With this win, it now means that Preston will earn at least $225,000 (AUD) following her singles performances here at Melbourne Park, which may not have come had Tennis Australia not given her a main draw wildcard.

Whilst not expecting to receive one, the World No. 161 was grateful for the faith Tennis Australia showed in her abilities.

“I’m extremely grateful for the wildcard,” she said.

“To be honest with you, I wasn’t expecting it because I have had a rough 12 months.

“I was super grateful (to receive one), and to be given the opportunity means that they believe in me and what I can do.”

Following her win, she’ll now face World No.13 Linda Noskova in the second round.
