After an incredible two-week run, which began during qualifying week, Maddison Inglis' Australian Open singles campaign has come to an end.
The Australian was beaten by World No. 2 Iga Swiatek in a comprehensive fashion on Rod Laver Arena with the scoreline reading 6-0, 6-3.
The quality of the six-time Grand Slam champion was shown throughout the match with the Polish superstar breaking the first five service games of the Western Australian to run out to a 6-0, 4-1 lead.
Inglis did have her moments, which included starting the second set with a break of Swiatek's serve to lead 1-0.
But, she surrendered the break in the next service game, which all but ended Inglis' chances.
This would leave SEN Tennis expert Candy Reid to lament how the match could have turned out had the qualifier gone 2-0 up.
"I think Maddi Inglis had her chance and she has let it go," she remarked on commentary.
"She's broken in the first game (of the second set) and then had that opportunity to hold serve.
"And you just wonder now (about what could have been)."
And with the 28-year-old only hitting seven winners compared to Swiatek's 22, it was also going to be a tough ask to pull off what would be a career-best win.
It's not all doom and gloom for Inglis, who will now leave Melbourne Park with a ranking of 113 (one off her highest) and $480,000 in prize money.
Swiatek will now play No. 5 seed Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals.
