The peak two race days for the Tasmanian Racing Club have arrived, beginning with the Magic Millions Tasmanian Derby program on Friday.
The eight-race card also includes two Magic Millions Classic races for 2yos & 3yo/4os.
The rail is in the true position for this meeting, as it has been traditionally, before moving to +6m on Sunday. The forecast is for fine weather all weekend.
Race 6 – 2. Johnich
Swerving the two shorties that won’t be a proposition for most punters, I’ll head to the Derby and make Johnich my best on a tricky betting card. He looks like a genuine stayer, who takes a while to wind up and should be suited by the Hobart circuit. His last start second in a $150,000 race at Flemington, I think, is superior to the local lead-up form, and I lean to him over Dad and Dave, who clearly appear to be the hardest to beat.
Race 1 – 13. Accusaient
The 3yo filly caught the eye working home last start on a day where it was very hard to make ground away from the rail. She appears to have improved since her 2yo season and, notably, has the blinkers and Craig Newitt applied for her second-up run. She was scratched from a 1200m race on Sunday to run here, and while the big early price has gone, she’s still a decent value play.
Race 2 – 3. Iron Stupa
The Patrick Kearney stable has traditionally had good results when they come to Tas, and he has runners sprinkled throughout this two-day carnival. Only fair in a couple of Victorian maidens, I liked the recent jump outs of Iron Stupa, who finds a pretty moderate Tasmanian maiden to open his account. I’m certainly keeping him much safer than the market is.
