Max Gawn underwent scans on a hamstring in Perth before the State of Origin showdown after reporting tightness.
The Melbourne skipper informed Victoria medicos after arriving in the west that he wasn’t feeling 100 per cent.
The Demons were rapt with the precaution and diligence shown by the Victoria staff, but the club still needed to be convinced Gawn was good to play against WA.
The veteran ruckman, like GWS counterpart Toby Greene, remained determined to play despite the less-than-ideal lead-in.
Both got through a game that claimed its fair share of casualties.
Jacob Weitering (chest), Mitch Georgiades, Sam Taylor, Callum Ah Chee (hamstrings) and Matt Rowell (finger) were all withdrawn from the contest.
