Parker: Bunker should correct ref howlers

I don’t know where to start, I’m scratching my head. There are over 200 games in an NRL season and we’re down two. Dragons v Bulldogs, there were some absolute clangers from the refs and they have huge ramifications.

The Dragons go on to lose the game; it’s round 1, no one cares much, but fast forward four or five weeks from now or 20 weeks, if that decision decides whether a team is going into a semi-final or a grand final, it’s a huge deal. Go ask Todd Payten if things go against him and the pressure he’s feeling.

Do the referees need a hand? What I mean is are you ok if the bunker comes on and says, ‘Ian you got it wrong, this is the decision’. Or do you go with the referee’s decision?

We hear from PVL (Peter V’landys) all the time about how the game has got quicker, decisions are being made quicker and it’s a spectacle that is always improving. It’s a wonderful spectacle. He does also say the refs get it right 95% of the time.

Do we want to see the bunker able to intervene with the referee on the run? It doesn’t have to slow the game down; it can be one replay. Or are we happy for refs to make mistakes as humans do? Five or six mistakes in a game is far too many.

I would class there being some howlers in the ones from Vegas, we’re not talking 50-50-decisions. This is what technology is for this is why they spent so many thousands on the bunker. They have more camera views than we do at home.

Parker: NRL has to get rid of golden point

Off the back of the weekend’s action over there in Vegas, does the NRL golden point need an overhaul?

Stephen Crichton kicked a field goal to help the Bulldogs beat the Dragons 15-14 in golden point thriller in Vegas.

I don't want to see golden point after two teams have duked it out for 80 minutes.

If you want to go down that path, go extra time.

In 2015, when we lost the grand final, remember the JT field goal, that was golden point.

After that year, they changed the rules so that in a grand final it's now extra time, then into golden point.

I want to see that in regular games.

I want extra time in normal games, not golden point, but it it does stay the same and go to golden point teams should get their captain's challenge back.

If the NRL decides that we're going to stick with a golden point then we have to reset everything.

Personally, I think Golden Point needs to go.

I'm a big advocate that we need a winner in a match, we don’t want draws.

Currently it feels like they play an amazing game then you’ve got to get to dinner so we better quickly get an end to this game so ‘play golden point bang, let's go’.

I’m not happy with the way that it's played or the way it's refereed because the game completely changes.

For 80 minutes you watch these teams going bang, bang, bang, and then all of a sudden, golden points on, and it's like a quick game of something, it's played differently.
