The dust is yet to settle on this year’s T20 World Cup, but there’s already plenty of discussion about who’ll host the final for the next edition of the tournament.
With the T20 World Cup coming to Australian and New Zealand shores in 2028, it has been reported by The Age’s Daniel Brettig that the South Australian government is pressing its case to host the last match of the tournament at the Adelaide Oval.
This is despite every major men’s ICC tournament played in Australia (and the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup) has had its final held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Those with knowledge of the bid have said that a multi-million-dollar bid is already in the works to bring the event to the City of Churches.
It’s also believed that one of the selling points of the bid includes that the weather during the October and November period – when the event will be held – will be better compared to Melbourne’s, with Adelaide having a lower rainfall average and warmer average temperature according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
If the South Australian government can find a way to convince the ICC to allow it to host the final, it would help continue to grow the state’s reputation for hosting major sporting events under Peter Malinauskas's reign as Premier.
Already, they have managed to secure the hosting rights to the AFL’s Gather Round, LIV Golf, the Supercars Grand Final and most recently the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, among other events.
Already, 12 of the 20 spots available for the 2028 T20 World Cup have been confirmed.
The fixtures and venues have not finalised as of yet.
