Kalyn Ponga has formally applied to represent New Zealand at the 2026 World Cup after updated Origin eligibility laws allow players to represent Tier One nations and their state.
Rumours around Ponga switching his allegiance to New Zealand have long swirled around the Newcastle captain, and it seems Ponga has finally made his decision to flip now that he will still be eligible to play for Queensland and the Kiwis.
Ponga has previously represented Australia in the World 9s back in 2019, however, had never represented Australia in a 13-a-side game.
Gold Coast five-eighth AJ Brimson was in similar territory, having only represented Australia at the World 9s, and was permitted to switch his allegiance to England in May last year, setting a precedent that should allow Ponga to change his allegiance.
If Ponga lines up for the Kiwis, he would take on Australia in the World Cup opening match on October 15, potentially lining up alongside new teammate Dylan Brown.
Ponga has represented the Maori All Stars on three occasions, with his application set to be discussed, and likely approved, tomorrow night.
The fullback previously praised the change in eligibility rules when they were announced last month.
“It is awesome for the game,” Ponga said last month.
“It’s going to make it better for us, for sure. Any decision that they made is for that reason. For me personally, it’s a decision that I’ll make with my family, you know?
“Like, it’s a conversation to have with my mum and dad, for sure. But I think for the game, it’s an awesome idea.”
Keano Kini is the incumbent New Zealand fullback and has been nominated for the Golden Boot while playing in that position.
