Voss: The Sharks half that’s best we are yet to see

After a strong start to the season, Andrew Voss has named the Sharks' half that we are yet to see the best of.

Having had four finals appearances in a row under coach Craig Fitzgibbon, 2026 is shaping up to be a big year for the Sharks to prove their premiership credentials.

A lot of that pressure has fallen onto the halves pairing of Nicho Hynes and Braydon Trindall and their ability to perform in the big matches.

Coming into 2026, the 2022 Dally M Medallist made a point of calling out claims that he and Trindall were the most under-pressure halves pairing in the NRL, pointing to their back-to-back preliminary final appearances.

And in their 50-10 annihilation of the Gold Coast Titans last Saturday, the duo did their best to rubbish it with Hynes and Trindall scoring two tries each.

Trindall, in particular, was at his playmaking best with four try assists and two line break assists.

Following that performance, Voss felt that while Hynes had his best gone by, Trindall's best is still ahead.

“This will sound odd that I’m putting pressure on a team that was one of the biggest winners from Round 1,” Voss said on SEN’s Vossy’s Verdict.

“I say this because I put a lot of focus on Braydon Trindall going into Round 1, and I’m so happy he saluted. (There's) always pressure on Nicho Hynes.

“But my observation is the best of Nicho Hynes has already happened, the best of Braydon Trindall, we are yet to see.”

And News Corp’s David Riccio would agree.

However, he wants to see Trindall replicate his performance from the Titans against a quality side, such as the Panthers.

“Couldn’t agree more,” Riccio stated.

“Consistency is king for Braydon Trindall. (He) has to find consistency.

“I found he dipped at times throughout last year. He had some highlight reels and then went quiet at times.

“And in those matches where Cronulla suffered those tight losses, mainly the Raiders (Round 5), the Wests Tigers (Round 8) (and) the Broncos (Round 16) last year that ultimately cost them a top four spot, it was just those moments in time where Tricky Trindall wasn’t that elite halfback he indicated he was and is last Saturday.

“With great respect to the Titans, that was a Group 3 race. They’re going to a Group 1 level in Bathurst.”

Cronulla takes on Penrith at Carrington Park in Bathurst on Saturday night.

Kick-off takes place at 7:35pm AEDT.
