Is Buckaroo scared of winning?

Is Buckaroo just simply a non-winner?

The Chris Waller-trained seven-year-old has competed in 34 races across his career yet has only won five. In fact, the gelding’s last win was on September 21, 2024.

After another loss on Saturday in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes, racing analyst Tom Haylock has claimed that Buckaroo is a "cat" who is scared of the winning post.

It's a synopsis that fellow racing analyst Miles Pfitzner couldn’t agree with on SENTrack’s Lay Back.

Haylock: “He clearly wasn't right (in the Peter Young) but he's still a cat.”

Pfitzner: “He's not a cat, mate.

Haylock: “He hasn't won for two years.

Pfitzner: “You can't call a horse that runs second in a Cox Plate a cat.

Haylock: “He doesn't win, (but) he's a very good cat.

“Buckaroo hasn't won since 2024!”

Despite fears of Buckaroo’s winning chances, he is still fairly fancied in the markets for multiple Group 1s this autumn, such as the Tancred Stakes (2400m), Australian Cup (2000m) and Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

Do you think Buckaroo is scared of passing the winning post first?
