Following reports of Bronson Xerri's supposed exit from the Bulldogs, David Riccio has explained some of the reasons that have led to his disgruntlement.
The story initially broke on Sunday with News Corp reporting that Xerri was about to ask for an immediate release from the Bulldogs.
Shortly after that was published, Bulldogs GM of Football Phil Gould posted on X that Xerri or his manager had consulted him about a release, nor did they leak to the media.
Following that, many were left confused as to who was telling the truth.
It was subsequently learnt that Xerri's discontent could stem from when the 25-year-old was allegedly told that he would be dropped to reserve grade, wouldn’t be offered a contract beyond 2027, and would have to play as the right centre.
When asked whether his dropping from the NRL side played a role in his potential desire to leave, Riccio believes it did.
“That’s definitely a factor, there’s no question about it,” Riccio told SEN’s Front Office with Vossy.
“It was a pre-season where Bronson was asked to train in the right centre position, which he didn’t feel as thou it was his best spot and would get the best out of him.
“He was a little disappointed to be playing right centre.
“Then came the performance in Las Vegas. It wasn’t poor by any measurement, but it certainly wasn’t outstanding either.
“And what we’re learning about Cameron Ciraldo, he’s not afraid to make a big call.
“We’ve seen that already in his short interim as an NRL coach. Whatever is best for the team, he’ll do.
“That will come tomorrow when Enari Tuala is named ahead of Bronson Xerri.
“And it’s a case of whether Bronson wants to basically go after the challenge.”
With Tuala’s likely inclusion in the NRL side, it is speculated that Xerri will feature in the NSW Cup side against the Raiders on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs’ NRL team will be raring to go for their Round 3 after not playing since March 1 against the Dragons.
They’ll travel to Canberra and face the Raiders on Thursday night.
SEN League will have live coverage of the match beginning from 6pm AEDT. with NRL Countdown, which can be heard on SEN’s radio network and on the SEN app.
Kick-off takes place at 8pm.
