James McDonald made history on Saturday, passing Damien Oliver's all-time Australasian Group 1 winning record.

Ollie previously held the title at 129 Group 1 wins leading into Golden Slipper Day, while J-Mac was on 128.

The champion jockey equalled Ollie's record in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes on Aeliana, then broke Ollie's record aboard Autumn Boy in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas.

Even more impressively, J-Mac won his third Group 1 of the day with Australia's best horse Autumn Glow in the George Ryder Stakes.

At the age of 34, the question beckons:

How many more Group 1s can James McDonald win?

McDonald has currently has 131 Group 1 victories to his name, including 101 in Australia, 16 in Hong Kong, 11 in New Zealand, one in Japan, one in the United Kingdom and one in the UAE.

See J-Mac's Group 1 wins per year below:

2008 - 1
2009 - 1
2010 - 1
2011 - 3
2012 - 8
2013 - 3
2014 - 5
2015 - 8
2016 - 4
2017 - 0 (Suspended)
2018 - 2
2019 - 8
2020 - 3
2021 - 12
2022 - 15
2023 - 13
2024 - 19
2025 - 17
2026 - 8

From 2021 to 2025, McDonald averaged 15 Group 1s per year.

If he continues that average for the next decade until he is 44, the champion hoop would be on 273 Group 1 triumphs by that age.

Keep in mind, Ollie retired at the age of 51, so if J-Mac continues riding until then, he could double Ollie's previous record, based off the statistics.

Speaking on SENTrack's Saturday Trackside, David Taggart and Miles Pfitzner debated how many more Group 1s McDonald could accumulate before he retires.

Early Crow 2

Taggart: “He's going to smash Ollie's record now, isn't he?”

Pfitzner: “He's gonna smash it. He could ride another 40 or 50."

Taggart: “Probably more mate, he's 34 (years old), I reckon he's (currently) averaging about 10 Group 1s a season.”

Pfitzner: “He's more than likely to probably go to Hong Kong for a while, ride a bit there, bank it up, and then go for family time.

“Ollie's probably going to (ride) longer than most… These younger guys, they won't do that.

“Let's say he rides to 45-48 (years old), he's got (at least) 10 years (left before retiring), at 10 (Group 1s) a year... He could ride another 100!”
