Andrew Voss believes that the Dolphins are capable of lifting the Provan-Summons Trophy at the end of the season.
But that claim comes with a big if.
After losing their season opener to the Rabbitohs, the Dolphins have rebounded to win their next two.
While their attack has been good, their defence has been equally impressive.
Having had the worst defence outside of the bottom three last year, the Dolphins have shown early signs of improvement, having only conceded an average of 21.33 points per game.
That sees them with the sixth-best defence so far.
Should they maintain their ranking, then the Dolphins could be well placed to win the competition in just their fourth season.
“I’m going to say this about the Dolphins if they, and it’s a massive if,” Voss prefaced on SEN’s Front Office with Vossy.
“If they get their defence right, they can win the comp.
“They have a dream 1-7 right now.
“So, their backline is the Hammer (Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow), (Jamayne) Isaako, he’ll get 200+ points this year.
“(Jake) Averillo (and Herbie) Farnworth, as good as any centre combination in the game for attack.
“(Selwyn) Cobbo on the other wing. (Kodi) Nikorima (still) playing the best football of his life.
“(Isaiaya) Katoa gets better by the game. They won’t swap him for (Nathan) Cleary, they’ll keep Katoa.
“And the pack they fielded the other night, these are still the players to come back, (Kurt) Donoghoe, (Jeremy) Marshall-King, Daniel Saifiti, Tom Flegler, Francis Molo.
“So, they’re missing five of their pack that bashed Cronulla the other night…physically, they battered Cronulla.
“There is a lot to like about the Dolphins.”
Voss then later added the magic number that the Dolphins needed to meet.
“They’ve got to average 20 points or less (in defence),” he added.
“They cannot go into the twenties and be a top four side. That’s a big come down from last year.”
The Dolphins will be hoping to continue their winning ways when they play the Brisbane Broncos in the Battle of Brisbane.
The two sides will feature this Friday at Suncorp Stadium.
SEN will have live coverage of the match available on SENQ and on the SEN app through Broncos Radio from 7pm AEST (8pm AEDT).
