Kane Cornes is putting Collingwood’s Jordan De Goey in the gun ahead of Friday’s clash against GWS at Marvel Stadium.
While De Goey starred in the Opening Round win against St Kilda with three goals and 19 disposals, he was awfully quiet in the Round 1 loss to Adelaide, picking up just 12 touches.
Cornes called out De Goey for his inconsistency and poor returns over an extended period, calling on the 184-gamer to deliver with a strong block of football for his team.
He discussed what impact Collingwood needs out of their forward of centre midfielder with David King on SEN Breakfast.
Cornes: “Only big names in the gun. In his last 13 games, Jordan De Goey has had 20 disposals twice.
“He was terrific in Opening Round with his impact on the game, but far too often for me, he has one good game, then three quite games.
“So far this season, he’s gone one good, one quiet. I didn’t see him against Adelaide.
“It’s time now to stretch four weeks together of great footy, because they need you. They absolutely need you to play three to four solid weeks in a row of good football.
“This up and down sort of stuff, the inconsistencies for Jordan De Goey are obvious… I had (Jack) Ginnivan as a better player than him; that's the reality of it now, that's the truth of where he sits.
“Collingwood need him. They either need his impact forward of the ball, or they need him to go on the ball and be a dominant force if they're going to be a successful team this year.
“For me, Jordan De Goey, and not for the first time, it must be said, is in the gun.”
King: “Aren't they that type of player? Isn't that the role? You go for long periods without influence, and then you have maximum damage for five-to-eight-minute windows.”
Cornes: “I think that's a cop out. Let's talk about those types of players, Petracca, Heeney, Rankine at his best, Horne-Francis at his best… I think there are others that do it more consistently than De Goey.”
King: “Horne-Francis hasn’t done it.”
Cornes: “But he’s young, he's not 30 years of age. But he's that type of player.
“Heeney does this pretty much every week.”
King: “Martin and Heeney have been the poster boys for this role, haven't they? But he’s just a level under that, isn’t he?”
Cornes: “Even I think Bailey Humphrey is coming into that role.”
King: “Give me a possession rate or a goal tally. Give me something tangible.”
Cornes: “He needs to be touching it 20 times. Like Dylan Moore getting 20 and three (goals), that’s what you need to be getting in that role if you’re Jordan De Goey.
“He's good enough; he's got to work harder to get to more contests and impact more significantly than what he is.”
Friday’s game between the Magpies and Giants begins at 7:40pm at Marvel Stadium.
