"It’d be an honour": Why Staggs changed his mind on leadership

Brisbane’s Kotoni Staggs has expressed his openness to becoming the next Brisbane Broncos captain should it be offered to him.

Having played his entire nine-season career in the NRL with the club, the 27-year-old has come up through the ranks in the senior side to now be involved in the leadership group.

That has included being a fill-in captain for two games during 2024.

With his experience, Staggs will be one of the likely candidates to succeed Adam Reynolds as captain following his retirement at the end of the season.

Had the versatile back been offered the role just a few years ago, the boy from Wellington, New South Wales, would have turned it down.

But after being involved in the leadership group for a couple of years, he has changed his mind if he gets the chance.

“Yeah, if you’d asked me that probably five years ago, I probably would have said no,” Staggs told SENQ Breakfast.

“Just obviously where I was in my career.

“Obviously (I’ve) stepped in this leadership role, I looked that as something that you know, I love doing.

“I love obviously leading the players out there, leading all the young boys coming through.

“And if that ever came up, that opportunity, I definitely wouldn’t turn it down.

“It’d be an honour to captain this club that I grew up wanting to play for.”

The Broncos will head south to Campbelltown to take on the Wests Tigers this Saturday.

Kick-off takes place at 7:35pm AEST, with SEN having live coverage of the match from 7:20pm with Broncos Radio.

That can be heard on SENQ and on the SEN app.
