West Coast premiership coach Adam Simpson is looking forward to helping Carlton find their next senior coach.

Simpson, who has been serving as a casual consultant at Carlton this year, ruled himself out of pursuing the coaching gig, but will now serve on the panel to find Michael Voss’ replacement with CEO Graham Wright, footy boss Chris Davies and President Rob Priestly.

Once approached by the Blues to have a say in the key decision, Simpson says it was a no-brainer to accept the role.

Having spent time recently both inside the four walls of a footy club and in the media, Simpson feels he’s well placed to have his finger on the pulse with finding the right man for the Blues.

“I’m really excited about it,” Simpson said on AFL Nation.

“To be a part of it in the coming weeks will be intriguing to see how I can help.

“I’ve known Wrighty for a long time, I met him at Hawthorn back in the day and Chris Davies is nothing but class.

“When I was approached, it was a no-brainer for me. I wasn’t up for the (head coaching) job, so I’m more than happy to help where I can.

“I think the people there, above, are in the right space to make a good, clear outlook of selection and I’m pleased to be a part of it.

“In this role in the media, I’m more in tune with the AFL and the game itself, I see way more football than you do as a senior coach.

“When you’re coaching week to week, you’re looking at, ‘Well we have Geelong next week, how are we going to beat them?’… and you just look at that.

“But in this role, you really get to see where the game is at.”

Davies himself was also really pleased to bring Simpson on board with this huge call. He expects the former head coach to bring the group crucial experience and insights.

“Adam comes onto our panel and gives the group a whole heap of experience,” Davies told SEN Breakfast.

“He’s a guy who missed a few jobs before he actually got the West Coast job. He did a very good job at West Coast for a period of time.

“It didn't end in the way that he wanted it to, so he can provide us with a whole heap of experience about what he went through.

“He’s a contemporary person who clearly has his finger on the pulse, so we're really pleased to have Adam as part of the group.”

Davies also revealed the steps that Carlton will undertake before beginning to conduct their search.

While he’s not sure how many candidates they’ll interview, Davies says the club will be patient and take however long they must to find the right person.

“I sit here really comfortably that Carlton is going to get the best person for the job, whatever skills they may be,” Davies said.

“I think the initial part will be for the club to clearly make sure that we're aware of what skills we want the person to have.

“Then we'll go through a process I'm sure of looking through the potential candidates.

“We'll whittle that down from there, and I'm not entirely sure right now how many people we'll actually interview, but we're not going to rush the process.

“Clearly, this is the most important hire that the club is going to make in the next period of time. They set the tone for the entire club, so it's a really important person that we need to bring in.

“We need to get the right person, and we'll take the amount of time that we need to.”
