PSG down Arsenal in dramatic final to claim UEFA Champions League

Arsenal's dreams of completing the Premier League / Champions League double are over, falling to PSG on penalties in a dramatic UCL final.

The Gunners entered the match without a single loss throughout their Champions League campaign, winning eight from eight in the group stages and cruising through the knockouts to face the Parisians at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.

As for PSG, a much tougher run through to the final saw the 2025 winners face off against Monaco, Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern Munich, passing each test to arrive as favourites to claim back-to-back European honours.

It was Arsenal that kicked off proceedings, breaking the deadline after just six minutes thanks to a thunderous strike from German forward Kai Havertz - marking the second time that Havertz has opened the scoring in a Champions League Final, formerly scoring for Chelsea in their 1-0 triumph over Manchester City in 2021.

The Londoners opted to sit deep and defend their lead as they have done superbly across the season, allowing PSG to control possession yet only conceding a single shot on target in the first half.

Into the second half, a positive move from Georgian winger Kvicha Kvaratskhelia had him hacked down from behind in the box by full back Cristhian Mosquera, awarding PSG a penalty, tucked home by Ousmane Dembele to level proceedings at 1-1.

The game wasn't without controversy, with multiple handball shouts on either end turned down by referee Daniel Siebert, who was rather timid with his whistle.

An extra time challenge from PSG's Nuno Mendes on Arsenal substitute Noni Madueke was the biggest shout of the lot, leaving Arsenal unrewarded and seeing the contest run out to a 1-1 finish after 120 minutes.

Penalties proceeded, and after misses from Eberechi Eze and Nuno Mendes, the fifth and final penalty came down to Arsenal's Gabriel, skying the finish to lose the shootout 4-3 in dramatic fashion.

PSG complete the double, crowned champions of France and Europe, while the Gunners' hunt for their first ever Champions' League honour remains.
