For a club that hasn’t signed a head coach for next season and is firmly anchored to the bottom of the ladder, you'd think it would be near on impossible to bring in any notable signings.

Yet, St. George Illawarra have proven otherwise with new recruit Scott Drinkwater explaining why he decided to join the Dragons.

While the North Queensland fullback was contracted with the club until 2027, the club granted the 29-year-old an early release allowing him to talk with rival clubs following the re-signing of Jaxon Purdue.

Following that release, plenty of clubs enquired about his services.

But it was the Saints, in the same week they parted ways with Shane Flanagan, that got his signature on a three-year deal on ANZAC Day.

But he isn't the only big-name signing that the Dragons have recruited for 2027.

They’ve managed to bolster their spine by bringing in Warriors’ half Luke Metcalf on a three-year deal alongside Roosters utility Connor Watson, who mainly featured as a No. 9 with the Tricolours for one year.

Alongside those three, the Red V have also secured experienced wing/centre Phillip Sami from the Titans alongside South Sydney second rower and Australian representative Keaon Koloamatangi in January.

Reflecting on his decision, Drinkwater admitted there were multiple reasons pointing him to join the Dragons.

“After meeting with Tim (Watsford), the CEO, I liked his bullish approach to how he wants to get things done, the views he had for the club (and) the way he's getting after it,” he explained on SEN’s Kick Off with Brandy and Jimmy.

“Dean Young was also another big factor there.

“I was coached by him up here in Townsville, and I felt like I played my best footy under him as the assistant coach. He was also a really big factor.

“Then as well, Val (Holmes) is one of my good mates and being able to go back down there and play footy with him.

“They got young forwards, but I just liked the approach of the CEO and the way he wanted to get the club going.”

But despite there being no confirmed coach for 2027, Drinkwater said that played no part in his decision, believing Watsford will make the right decision for the position.

“No, I didn't (ask),” he added.

“I didn't wanna jump too far ahead of all that stuff and try and get too involved.

“From talking to him, I know he'll pick the best person available, and I wasn't too bothered (about it) after meeting with him.”

The Dragons have the bye in Round 15. Their next match after that is against the Newcastle Knights on June 19 at McDonald Jones Stadium.
