Ladbrokes All-Weather Spreyton is the scene for Sunday thoroughbred racing, with an eight-race program.
It's a good card of winter racing with the $45,000 Open Handicap (1009m) a clear highlight.
The first of the day in Devonport is set for 11:16.
Race 8 – 1. Hartman
Hartman ran his rivals ragged at this track just under a month ago, and I think he can do the same again. He obtained an uncontested win in his last start over 1350m, which is key for him, and this race sets up for a similar outcome. Up to 1650m and 60.5kg are slight concerns, but his tick-over trial last week in Devonport was excellent and should have him spot on to continue his winning ways.
Race 4 – 1. Garcon D'espoir
The market had Garcon D’espoir as the only horse that could upset the hot-pot Blameitontheboogie when he resumed, and that assessment was spot on. The final margin was a nose in favour of the favourite, and the quinella put over five lengths on the third horse. That first-up run was off the back of a nice trial for Garcon D’espoir, who has clearly come back in excellent order. If Codi Jordan can slot in with cover from a sticky draw (seven of eight), the horse should finish over the top of his opposition.
Race 3 – 4. I'm A Grunt
It might be a stretch, but I’ve found I’m A Grunt in what is only a moderate maiden. The 5yo was sent out $101 on debut, despite an okay trial where he finished just behind horses who are proven on race day. He bombed the start first-up, trailed the field throughout, and then passed a few late. His best work was what he did through the line, suggesting 1350m suits. There are a lot of convictions among the opposition, which leads me to chase one at a price.
