Warriors coach Andrew Webster has told SEN that halfback Luke Metcalf still has an important part to play in 2026 ahead of his departure to the St George Illawarra Dragons.

Following the contract extension of playmaker Tanah Boyd, Metcalf negotiated an early release from the Warriors to sign a three-year deal with the Dragons from 2027.

Whilst Webster acknowledged his disappointment in losing the 27-year-old, he believes Metcalf is a vital part to the Warriors’ quest for a maiden Premiership.

“Luke is a world-class player,” Webster told SEN 1170.

“He got injured when he finally made his return to the side. Then with the contract saga, it’s taken a little bit more time to get him back and now he’s playing NSW Cup.

“He’ll give himself an opportunity (in first grade) if he keeps playing well and putting pressure on the halves.

“That’s exactly what we want. We want players in form and playing well because we have seen how quickly injuries can happen.

“If gets his opportunity this year and forces his way into the team or through injury, we know he’s a quality player and he’ll make the most of that chance.”

The Warriors suffered a shock loss at home in Round 15 to the Cronulla Sharks. The flashpoint of the match was referee Gerard Sutton penalising the home side for a shot clock violation.

The Sharks opted to take a penalty goal as a result and it proved decisive as Cronulla outlasted the Warriors 10-8.

The normally mild-mannered Webster was audibly frustrated in his post match press conference and labelled the incident as "unprofessional."

“I have to (move on) and trust that the NRL will sort it,” Webster added on SEN 1170.

“I was most frustrated with how I took away from how good the Sharks were.

“When an opposition coach blows up, it (isn’t a good look).

“I never want to (lose my temper) but I did do it.

“I felt like I needed to but I am moving on.”

The Warriors travel to Christchurch where they will host the North Queensland Cowboys for the first time at the brand new One NZ Stadium.
