NRL star turned boxer George Burgess has lifted the lid on how emotional it was to save a man from jumping from an overpass in Brisbane.

Ahead of his fight with Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Burgess had been preparing for a day of media when his Uber drove past a man on the wrong side of the railings.

He was travelling with No Limit rep Tim Ashworth when the pair sprang into action.

“It was quite surreal what happened, I’m still taking it in,” Burgess told SENQ Breakfast. “We came out of the hotel on our way to do radio and something made me turn my head and I spotted this gentleman on the wrong side of the railings and it was over the train tracks. It was very dangerous.

“We stopped the Uber and we got out, we got there and we talked to him for a little bit, asked him his name and we got hold of him and we pulled him back over, it was very emotional, very, very emotional to be with someone that is that close to the end.

“We got to speak to him and gave him some support, and he is getting help now with some good people and we will keep track of him.”

Earlier, Burgess had detailed how he grabbed the man to stop him from jumping or falling.

“Tim was (there first) holding him and couldn’t get him by himself. And then once I got there and got hold of him, I wasn’t letting go … then we pulled him over the railings.

“He was numb. He was at his end, was a shell of a man. But hopefully now we can rebuild him because there is support out there that some people are too proud to seek out.

“But we’ll do everything we can for Michael, that’s his name, Michael …”
