World Cup daily news. We will bring you the latest from around the world as the FIFA World Cup 2026™ finally gets under way (All times AEST).

GERMANY PARTS WAYS WITH NAGELSMANN

After their disappointing exit against Paraguay in the Round of 32 on Tuesday (AEST), Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has parted ways with the DFB.

It's been reported by German newspaper Bild that the 38-year-old has left his position after it was 'strongly encouraged' that he resigns.

The former Bayern Munich manager has been in charge of the national side since 2023.

He had a winning record 62.16%.

Former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has been linked to the position.

SWISS PROGRESS

And with goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye, Switzerland are through to the Round of 16.

While they may have lost the possession battle, they looked far better on attack and made the most of their chances.

It's now their fourth straight appearance in the Round of 16 at a FIFA World Cup™ and their first win in the knockout stages since 1938 (when the tournament consisted of 16 teams and only had single-elimination games).

The Swiss will stay put in Vancouver for the next couple of days as they await either Ghana or Colombia.

CHANCE GOES BEGGING FOR SWITZERLAND

How has he missed that?

With the Swiss up 2-0, Fabian Rieder had the chance to secure the result beyond doubt with a wide open goal.

Instead, he's gone across the face of goal and shot it straight back to Luca Zidane.

With Belgium having been down a similar margin in their win against Senegal, it might be a chance that they regret.

SWISS START SECOND HALF WITH A BANG

Switzerland are on the march here.

For the second game in a row, they have started the second half with a goal to double their lead.

This time it was Nottingham Forest's Dan Ndoye scoring having done so with a lovely finish in the bottom left corner.

Algeria certainly have their work cut for them if they are any chance of winning their first World Cup knockout game.

SWITZERLAND TAKES THE EARLY LEAD

Within the opening 10 minutes, the Swiss take a 1-nil lead in Vancouver courtesy of Breel Embolo.

He gets a pass across the box from Johan Manzambi who has done all the work having dribbled past several defenders and gets the ball around Zidane.

All Embolo had to do was tap it in. And he's done exactly that.

TOUCHING TRIBUTE

Beautiful touch from the Portuguese team on the one year anniversary of Diogo Jota's death.

The Liverpool star, who was killed alongside his brother while driving through Spain 12 months ago, would have been a part of the World cup squad under Roberto Martinez.

He was named as an honorary member of the 23-man team and has been represented for their anthem at every game so far.

After the victory against Croatia, Ronaldo, his teammates and other staff were pictured donning Jota's No 21 jersey.

Ronaldo was visibility emotional and pointed to the sky as the entire team remembered their friend.

"We knew what does this date mean for us. We knew it," Ronaldo said afterwards.

“We won for Diogo, for us, for Portugal We knew it before the game, it was such a special moment.

“We speak today before the game, our group, that the coincidence of life, it’s unbelievable.

“It means a lot to us, not only because we won the game.”

ALGERIA v SWITZERLAND ABOUT TO GET UNDERWAY

For the third and final match of today's play, we're off to BC Place in Vancouver with Algeria and Switzerland battling it out for a spot in the Round of 16.

The winner of this clash takes on either Colombia or Ghana.

RONALDO ON RETIREMENT

After his sister suggested that this World Cup will be the end of his brother's international career, Ronaldo has poured water on the whispers.

“I don't make reckless decisions," he said after the victory over Croatia.

“I will decide after the tournament, not now”.

THIS IS INSANE

Croatia have found the back of the net 13 minutes into 10 minutes of added tim thanks to Joško Gvardiol but the ref is being called to check for an offside. This is WILD.

NO GOAL! OFFSIDE AGAIN! That's two disallowed for Croatia.

This is drama on top of drama as we enter the 16th minute of extra time.

The final whistle goes and the Ronaldo and Portugal World Cup journey continues. For Luka Modric and Croatia, this is the end.

Extraordinary match and Portugal will now face Spain in the last 16.

Croatia fans are furious and have been pelting plastic bottles all over that end of the pitch in dismay.bottles

GOAL PORTUGAL!

Super sub Gonçalo Ramos produces a superb header from Leão's cross in the third minute of stoppage time.

Portugal 2-1 ahead! HUGE!

RONALDO OFF

Is that the last we see of Ronaldo on the World Cup stage?

He's come off in the 80th minute with the match evenly poised at 1-1.

ANOTHER CLOSE OFFSIDE!

Croatia again think they've scored through Petar Sučić but he's offside as well. So close.

This game is bonkers right now.

GOAL PORTUGAL!

And it is Ronaldo who converts from the penalty spot after Renato Veiga is brought to ground in the area during a corner.

CR7 stepped up and sent Dominik Livaković the wrong way for his first World Cup knockout goal.

It's 1-1 at the hydration break.

DRAMA IN TORONTO

First Croatia thought they had a second goal when Vlasic stabbed it home, only for offside to be called on Stanisic on the lead-up.

Then Rafael Leão was desperately unlucky with his long-range effort which struck the crossbar.

Not long after, Cristiano Ronaldo had the ball in the back of the net only to be adjudged offside. It was so tight that it required VAR intervention and the goal was disallowed.

GOAL CROATIA!

Croatia are ahead!

It's Ivan Perisic who fires Croatia into the lead in the 53rd minute with their first shot on goal.

Portugal had the lion's share of possession prior but couldn't make the most of it.

Over you to, Cristiano.

"RONALDO TO RETIRE"

We all knew this news would come at some stage but just over an hour out form Portugal taking on Croatia for a spot in the last 16, Cristian Ronaldo's sister has dropped a bombshell on Portuguese TV.

Having become the first player to score at six World Cups at the age of 41, Ronaldo's sister Katia Aveiro claims that whenever Portugal is eliminated form this current tournament, he will call time.

“From the information I have, from a reliable source, I believe that this is the last dance, so let’s enjoy it," she told SportTV.

“I believe it’s not today that they’ll say goodbye, but it’s coming soon. I strongly believe this is the farewell.

“So enjoy it a lot because it will be difficult to find someone, uh, after 200 goals. I’m talking about the Portuguese national team.

Ronaldo is currently the all-time leading international goalscorer with 145 for Portugal in his career.

Most expensive knockout match ever?

England v Mexico on Monday (AEST) is set to go down in World Cup history given the insane prices tickets are currently going for.

England beat DR Congo to set up a clash at the Azteca Stadium, 40 years on from the infamous hand of God moment in the same location.

It is set to smash records with some tickets online being touted for upwards of $53,000!

When tickets were initially put on sale, you could lock in this knockout clash for $340...well congrats to anyone that locked them in early.

The $53k tickets are category one while Cat 2 are going for almost $20k and category 3 are a minimum of $6k.

With the majority of England fans in Atlanta following Thursday's victory, there is then the question of flights into Mexico City which are already $2k.

Mexico are yet to concede a goal this World Cup and have had their fans use noise and late night distraction tactics outside the hotels of their opposition.

QUIT OR BE SACKED

Germany's World Cup ended on a penalty shootout in the round of 32 - it was yet another premature end to a campaign that brough the country "shame" according to the local media.

Now, coach Julian Nagelsmann has reportedly been told to step down or face the sack amid whispers Jurgen Klopp is being lined up as his replacement.

According to Sky Sports in Germany, The German football association (DFB) has issued the ultimatum amid growing tensions with the coach.

Defeat to Paraguay was the first time Germany had ever lost a penalty shootout in a World Cup.

While Nagelsman insists he will not step down and that he wants to remain at the helm, he has come in for some significant criticism from former Liverpool and Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann.

“This is a guy who rarely watches games, rarely watches games," he told BILD.

“He’s never been once in Milan to watch Bisseck play. He should’ve gone to the World Cup.

“He’s never been to Brentford in two-and-a-half years to watch Schade… In the Bundesliga, he might be watching one or two games a month.

“There’s Champions League games where Real Madrid played (against Bayern). We had the Africa Cup of Nations in January, where he could have watched (group stage opponents) Ivory Coast and some of the potential opponents. He didn’t go.

“(Portugal coach Roberto) Martinez is here, Tuchel is here. [France coach Didier] Deschamps, who’s won everything, is in his mid-60s, is in America for three weeks.

“Who’s not there? Our man. This is where I’ve got no sympathy for him.”

SPAIN MAKE IT 3

They're really finding their groove now. Marc Cucurella with a sublime cross in from the left, he's had a blinder today and it's slotted in by Mikel Oyarzabal.

When can France play Spain?

Full-time and that's a statement from Spain. It's the first time they have made it to the last 16 since winning the thing in 2010. They will face the winner of Portugal v Croatia for a place in the quarter-finals.

"WE STILL TALK"

It will be an emotional day for the Portugal team as they come up against Croatia in the knockouts.

Not only is it likely the last time we will see one of Luka Modric or Cristiano Ronaldo in their international colours but today marks the one year anniversary since the tragic death of Diogo Jota.

The Liverpool star, who was killed alongside his brother in a car accident last July, has had his name carried with his Portugal teammates throughout this World Cup.

Jota was named in Roberto Martinez's squad as an honorary member of the team and his image has appeared on the big screens during every anthem in Portugal's matches.

Ruben Neves, who carried Jota's coffin at his funeral last year, says he still speaks to his friend and former teammate.

"Few people know this," Neves, who is also wearing Jota's number 21 national shirt at this World Cup, told Portuguese media.

"We have a WhatsApp group with Rute and Diogo, and it's still there, and we continue to talk there.

"Whenever something special happens, I have the conversations archived on my WhatsApp so I can continue to send him messages.

"I and the entire national team team will do everything we can to keep Diogo here with us, on our team.

"The day after the news, for me, is the most difficult day of my life. The most important aspect for me to be able to play was wanting to play for Diogo first."

SPAIN DOUBLE UP

It's a beautifully constructed goal from the Spaniards and they have doubled their lead in LA.

Patience paid off and it's a first goal for his country for Pedro Porro!

SPAIN DENIED

Despite taking the lead in the first half against Austria, pundits and players were left truly baffled after Spain had a goal disallowed.

thirty minutes into the clash in LA, Marc Cucurella found the back of the net off a Lamine Yamal corner, but the referee signalled for an Austria free-kick.

Replays showed that Pau Cubarsi had impeded goalkeeper Alexander Schlager in the area and as such the goal was denied.

“I don’t think there is anything wrong with that at all," Dion Dublin told the BBC.

“There is three Spain players around Alexander Schlager and he should be stronger.

“They’re allowed to stand there and jump for the ball, you don’t have to allow the goalkeeper to catch it.

“I think it is absolutely ridiculous, I think that is a perfectly legal goal.”
