Chad Cornes believes a contract extension is looming large for Port Adelaide's Mitch Georgiades.

Earlier this year, the Power premiership player and former assistant coach made a call on the key forward's future with the club, with his current deal set to conclude at the end of 2027.

“I would be very surprised if he doesn’t go back to Perth at the end of next year. I’d be very confident that he wouldn’t be (at Port) in two years,” Cornes said at the time.

Cornes' information at the time was rejected by Port coach Josh Carr and Georgiades' manager Tom Seccull.

Now Cornes suggests the 24-year-old could be staying put at Alberton.

“I think it sounds like at some stage he will sign a one or two-year extension," Cornes told SEN SA's The Run Home.

“I’ve checked with the club, and he hasn’t signed a contract extension. He is still contracted until the end of next year – they’re having good discussions around it.

"I think they’re just waiting to see if and when Zak Butters leaves, how much money that will free up for Mitch – so I think they will up the offer.

"I don’t think its imminent, the signing, but the talks are very productive.

"It's great news because when I said earlier in the year that I didn’t think he would be there post next season, I firmly believed that at the time, but he must be really happy there.

"His form is good and they will obviously up that offer by quite a lot – so like I said I hope he stays, and it looks like he will re-sign at some stage.

"There's no rush on it, so it's not going to be in the next week or two from what I'm hearing, but I think eventually it will happen."

Georgiades is contracted at Port for another year, with his restricted free agency not opening up until the end of 2027 as it stands.

He has kicked 37 goals in 17 games in 2026 for a career tally of 204 goals from 109 outings.

Georgiades was concussed early in the loss to St Kilda on the weekend and will subsequently miss Saturday's home clash with Fremantle.
