The next five years are going to be shaped by a new generation of emerging talent, with up and coming players showing potential to become stars every week.

Among these rising talents, five players have clearly stood out and Josh Jenkins believes they will be the best performers over the next five years from this Rising Star class.

Jagga Smith deserves (the Rising Star award), absolutely no questions asked,” Jenkins told SEN Locked In.

“It's about what you do in your Rising star season, not what you will become long-term.

“But the young players - you want to look at them long term.”

Jenkins ranked his best five prospects from 5-1.

See JJ's top five below:

5. Dylan Patterson (Gold Coast)

“The kid from Gold Coast. We have barely seen him - you might not even know who he is. Serious wheels - he is fifth.

“I love his game. If you want to make sky-high comparisons, which I've done... Cyril Rioli style. Can’t tackle him, electrifying in the phone box, love him.”

4. Jagga Smith (Carlton)

“Deserves his spot. He looks a fair bit like his teammate, Sam Walsh.”

3. Harry Dean (Carlton)

“A little bit undersized, which worries me. Does he become Callum Wilkie? That’s probably a really good comparison for him.”

2. Willem Duursma (West Coast)

“He flashes a bit of Nathan Fyfe with the aerial stuff and then he flashes a bit of Marcus Bontempelli with the silk and ability to run from stoppage.”

1. Jobe Shanahan (West Coast)

“The number one rising star I would want for the next decade is a man that I think has got a little bit of Joe Daniher. A key forward, can get behind the ball, can maybe even go into the ruck.

“I love his game. He is already the player they use to go behind the ball, he is tough, aerially he is fearless and he’s kicking goals.”

Kane Cornes also offered his prospective top five.

“I would have it as Willem Duursma, then daylight,” he added.

“I think this kid is a freak. How you can run at full tilt, bounce the footy and then slot it from 50 the way he does is frightening.

“Then I would have Shanahan. He has some of the best dukes in football right now, let alone what that's going to look like in three years time.

“West Coast are set. They are set up. Just get the next two years right and things are going to be pretty fun at the Eagles.

“Then I would have Jagga Smith, then Dean. I don't know enough about Patterson yet.

“It is a good question, but Jagga Smith deserves the rising star this year. If I was voting, that's who I would vote for.”

Jenkins: “Would you throw a Cooper Trembath in there?”

Cornes: “I like Trembath. He doesn't complain when he goes into the ruck. He is competitive and he's got a huge leap on him.

“He is better than I thought. There was all the hype around him early when he was kicking goals.

“I wasn't caught up in that, but I'm more impressed with him since.”
